Seems to be a restoration job gone wrong... strong shades of the Cutty Sark maybe.

Quite symbolic for France what with it being a Christian building. We'll be in central Paris tomorrow so may be able to go and have a little ogle at it. Eta a little surprised that Mr Stabby is a torygraph reader but life is full of unexpected things. Which is good.

That's quite a serious fire. Even getting all that scaffolding down will be a costly job.

I've been watching the coverage on BBC news. While it's clearly a popular building for tourists and holds a high cultural value in France, it's just a building. Nobody has been killed yet it seems every leader from around the world is tweeting messages that sound as if it's another twin towers.
A bit over the top I think.

Well, it is always regrettable when any historic structure is seriously damaged I suppose, and Notre Dame is fairly symbolic of France. It is of course good news that no human life has been lost, but such an iconic edifice being consumed by a mighty conflagration will tend to attract comment.

It's not exactly overwhelming proof of God's existence. Although He does of course work in mysterious ways.

Where was my international sympathy when I had a house fire!
Whilst I do sympathise for you, and I do. Losing everything in a house fire is my worst nightmare. This is an 850 year old cathedral that is internationally recognized, the rebuild is going to be over a billion quid. The main tower has gone and the entire roof has collapsed

Maybe they've chosen a replacement pope, a big fat one?
