Relax and uncork that Merlot, Patty.
So sorry for the horrible day but, as we all know by now, sadly, s**t happens and is no respecter of birthdays..... try again tomorrow!
Met xx

Well not quite as planned... Plan..me walk dogs whilst son has gym session then out for coffee and cake treat..... 'Lost' the old collie on the cliff path..panic moment as daughter away and Zara has been known to go and try and find them Enrolled help of the lunatic retriever in hunt n seek..she hurtled down dead end path where we found the old girl in distressed state.. Idiots had bar b que'd and left many many rib bones..Zara obviously thought birthday and christmas rolled into one and was frothing as bone had logged across roof of mouth and splintered between back teeth..think internal non removable brace. My first thought was tie up the dustbin before I had 2 sick dogs. Couldn't get the bone out and trying to get Zara off the path towards town a bit challenging. Eventually managed to get picked up by daughter Father in law for vet trip. She had to have sedation to remove said bone and is very sorry for herself... cake n coffee now gonna be a belated treat as i seem to have spent most of today at the vets...cost £218... vet has warned if pre bone lodging she swallowed some we may be in for more 'interesting times' So not the best birthday as sons other plan out for meal is also set aside Birthdays !y the By whats H A N D...mm?.. Bugger to say the least I hope it improves as the evening goes on Well in a word....No...not for the dog Anaestics have made the poor ole gurl legless..son and I are having to carry her.. However Ive had Dover Sole, Jersey Royal new pots, salad and lemon cheesecake washed down by organic wine(birthday present) so things improving.. Then middle son rocked up with chocs ... perfect end..

Happy Birthday Patty, I reckon a couple of bottles Merlot will put you right. PS hope the canine dustbin is OK Phil the canine dustbin is fine..thats the young dog we've had role reversal..its the old dog thats not she's now peed on the chair, carpet and sons shirt and not doing good...I have to ask myself what would they do?..They wouldn't go vets at this time of night and would probably go to bed...I'm going to sit up with her..it could be the anaesthetic or her time has come.

Oh Patty that's so hard, Maisie our cocker went down hill very quickly, went blind, deaf and her back legs went all in a very short space of time. I even had to carry her out of the boat and hold her back end to toilet her. Decided that her quality of life was about zero so took her for the final jab. Stayed with her of course and fed her gravy bones as they injected her so her last memories were being with her dad and eating, her two favourite things in the world. Then cried my eyes out. Patty with luck it will be the effects of the anaesthetic Phil

Well eventful night..her balance is 'interesting'...she cannot get up stairs easily but that don't stop her trying ..Ive now blocked the stairs off... Still incontinent ..washed all the dog bedding, plus settee and cleaned floors. At least youngest son here and he can lift her Thanks everyone for your kind comments... I will update daughter and see ...but not expecting them to come back early from their week away. In laws now wading in with expert opinions....

Patty, you may find "puppy pads" useful, pop one under the dog where ever she is laying, they will protect bedding and carpets. Wilko have good value ones. Phil

Our 17 Yr old dog died about 3 yrs ago. She was healthy, still up for 2 or 3 mile walks, however she had always been in the habit of sneaking out to do a tour of our estate. She sneaked, ate a load of chips and stuff from local takeaway and finished her kidneys off. Test showed they had failed so she had the final jab. I hope I only have a week of illness before they put me down.

Jim, I don't use them personally but have for the dogs, we had a Yoodle whose kidneys failed so understand that scenario also had a dog whose liver failed that was no fun either Having been a dog owner for at least 60 years and seen so many trot over the rainbow bridge I wonder why I keep taking them on. But they give so much back and I suspect that the 3 current incumbents will actually outlast me, it's a race with no winners. Phil

Oh another use for puppy pads was to use under Chris's legs when her lymphoedema was at it's worst and she was leaking pints of the stuff ... saved the mattress. Phil

Ive used these puppy pads to put wet boots on..saves the floor. I'll get some as I suspect this will be ongoing now.. Daughters house extremely aromatic, we sit here with doors open. Ive washed everything so now I think its Zara but gonna wait couple days to see if she's gonna make it..dont see point in stressing her out. I let son look after the lunatic retriever..she 'helped' him with his van...
