I'm wondering, when the carbon target of nil is achieved, what everything is going to be made out of? You can't produce plastic with leaving a carbon footprint. Virtually everything is made out of plastic. Steel too, lots of carbon results.

We need to stop producing crap we don’t really need, and we need to stop doing stuff we don’t need to do. It’s that simple. Well unfortunately (although true) everyone has a different idea about the word ‘need’. I mean, do I really need this smart phone I type this out on? Would I really suffer (and those around me) if I chucked it in the cut? Don’t answer that.... This is something which really annoys me. I have never bought a new phone or computer or tablet. I'm perfectly happy with older stuff as it does what I need to do. Current Laptop 2013 phone 2015 tablet 2016 all second hand and cheap as chips as were previous devices. The greed driven IT system is based on obsolescence and ever bigger more power and data hungry software. The especially sad thing about this is that humans will eventually make themselves obselete then the money will start shouting, never mind talking. Mind you if we do get proper autonomous products like cars (25 years away in reality if you ignore the salesmen ) then maybe people could do more enjoyable things but that would rely on the others who are getting the massive profits sharing a bit of the money. They will have to do that otherwise there are no profits. Silly situation. The starting sequence of Terminator looks quite prescient bearing in mind it was 35 years ago! Actually there is so much truth here, people are encouraged to get new lappys on the basis of having more memory, we have gone from 10s of gigs to hundreds of gigs and now teragigs. We don't need it. Our first laptop had 20gigs and we managed it by DELETING all the crap and saving stuff to disc. It's the same with cars, they now have so many fancy functions that most people don't ever use or know how to use... all pointless, just more to go wrong, don't need parking assist just learn how to drive, don't need rain sensors, just learn to recognise raindrops on the windscreen and flip the switch on the stalk Phil

It pains me to say this, but having supported capitalism all my life, I have recently realised that capitalism depends entirely on growth. Perhaps we could have relatively harmless increased growth per capita if we reduced the population of the world significantly, but this seems unlikely for the next 50 years, by which time the population is expected to stabilise at 11billion.

This is exactly the problem with the system we currently live under, the need for growth. Any system where GDP is more important than the well being of the populace and the planet is doomed to failure.

"Emma Thompson has flown from LA in order to join the climate protestors (spot the hypocrisy), stating that she would love to get arrested on her 60th birthday. Hope the police oblige her, and she can then be the plaything of a big butch lezza in HMP Holloway." "That's great isn’t it 1000 gallons of aircraft fuel into the atmosphere so this fuckwit can join a climate protest, forgive me but aren’t planes by far the worst polluters in regular use these days, so well done Emma you silly old cow you have cancelled yourself out, stick to blow jobs at home or something really worthwhile for the first time in your petty self obsessed world." "Spends hours going on about climate change with her middle class moaners, saw one Extinction spokesman saying “ it’s simply not acceptable flying to Vegas for a hen party’s “ “ the days of frivolous flying need to finish “ - TELL Emma Thompson that!! Before she jets back to LA ….." "Another rich twat telling the plebs what to do while gaining publicity for herself and virtue signalling points among her right on luvvie friends. They wouldn’t arrest a Dame and even if they did it’s not as if she has to take out a pay day loan to pay the fine." "Hypocritical old Hag. How dare she presume to lecture “the common-people” on the dangers of pollution while living a “jet-set” lifestyle? Her “carbon-footprint” will be more than most people could manage in a thousand years. "She is a perfect example of the hectoring, over-cossetted, self-absorbed idiots who believe that they are more morally and socially developed than the “ordinary” people, and so feel that they are entitled and obliged to lecture us as though we were schoolchildren. Where these “Arty-Farty” type get the idea that their opinion is any more relevant than someone who lives an “ordinary” life is a mystery to me. Acting, singing etc. are the most ephemeral of achievements, they are fleeting flights of fancy. Although they can give momentary pleasure, if they never happened, well… the world would continue turning." Thomson is a self-important Twat who should keep her views on refugees, pollution and politics to herself. Nobody should take seriously the views of some boot-faced harridan who plays pretend for a living. I hope she crashes next time she’s flying in to lecture us on the wickedness of air travel."

"Have you seen the size of her house? Must cost a lot of electricity to heat and light a house like that….. But no, it’s us poor people that are in need of educating. We’re the real problem. Hypocrite."
"Blah blah, typical champagne socialist. I planted a tree to fly here. What a load of shit. Now, if she said ‘I killed ten babies’ it might have had more of a claim to offsetting her twat/carbon footprint, as overpopulation is the reason the world is turning to shit."

Mind you look on the bright side. All that hot air spouted by the protesters got trapped in a heat dome and created a wonderfully undispleasing weekend for boating !

This is how they left the place, allegedly. Not too much plastic chucked on the floor then. They seem to be more of the problem than the solution. Just a bunch of jumped up idiots that will take to the streets at every protest, no matter what its for

And the blighters (Koch brothers for example) who make millions of pounds a week from plastic packaging are laughing all the way to the bank.

I thought if there was a large gathering then people were encouraged to just leave their litter behind when they leave the site. If they all have to go and find bins you have people randomly wandering about which is hazardous. Much easier to leave the litter then simply get a contractor in to deal with it afterwards.
Reading festival seems to work like that. I have never been to any festivals but have passed the Reading site afterwards and it was a mountain of rubbish but that is the policy of the organisers not the fault of the individuals attending the event.
Eta obviously it is the fault of individuals if their chosen behaviour pattern generates excessive rubbish but the not tidying up might be a policy.
