I've been moored near a lock this weekend that has had five volunteers manning it all weekend, this happens regularly even though there are no volunteers on the next lock down. Or on the very next lock up, that is a busy lock and could probably do with some volunteers. If the amount which each voulnteer costs per hour is correct(£32/hr) Then it's cost £960 per day to man that lock over the bank holiday week end so £3,840 in total. Its never took 5 people to man a single lock, so I ask again why does one lock need five volunteers? Does it have a record for incidents or accidents? <iframe width="17.200000000000045" height="4.300000000000011" style="position: absolute; width: 17.200000000000045px; height: 4.300000000000011px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none;left: 15px; top: -5px;" id="MoatPxIOPT1_82675094" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="17.200000000000045" height="4.300000000000011" style="position: absolute; width: 17.2px; height: 4.3px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 806px; top: -5px;" id="MoatPxIOPT1_80705939" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="17.200000000000045" height="4.300000000000011" style="position: absolute; width: 17.2px; height: 4.3px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 15px; top: 155px;" id="MoatPxIOPT1_57651693" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="17.200000000000045" height="4.300000000000011" style="position: absolute; width: 17.2px; height: 4.3px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 806px; top: 155px;" id="MoatPxIOPT1_10133877" scrolling="no"></iframe> Is there an on going maintenance issue with it that could cause one?

Maybe it's a volunteer training day. Five does sound a lot (too many cooks spoil the broth) but if some of them were new it could be some sort of induction or similar arrangement. Did they have any branding other than CRT? I once saw a whole load of volunteers and asked the man in charge he said it was something sponsored by Bloomberg possibly a team building thing. I'm not quite sure exactly what he meant but he mentioned Bloomberg. They are some sort of media company I think or financial or both.

There are five lock keepers on this lock regularly, it is in a nice spot. So no it wasn't a training day or unusual so if we say the locks are manned 20 weekends a year and we'll be kind and say there are only 4volunteers for two days it costs £30,720 a year for volunteers to man that lock.

The figure Of £32/hr came from a freedom of imformation request i think. There are managment costs, costs to the uniform life jackets and other kit, training costs and the volunteers are paid exspenses. Some of them do very well out of it. The relevance of Ethiopians I can't see, but never mind. Most of the vollies we know(including my husband)don't claim any expenses.Paul also volunteers with CRT's heritage fleet-he pays an annual members' fee for that & had to pay for his own uniform. It must be the managers faking all the exspenses claim forms then?

It does sound like a scam of some sort.

It does sound like a scam of some sort. With regard to volunteers costing us £32 per hour, this did not come from a foi request as suggested. The figures was calculated from volunteer expenditure and volunteer hours as given in CART's 2017/18 Annual Report after checking with the Trust. Whilst not disputing the £32 per hour figure at the time, I understand that CART now give a figure of between £4 and £5 when the subject is raised. With regard to claiming expenses, most charities adopt a policy of allowing expense claims so as not to exclude those who are unable to afford travel costs.

I don't like volunteer lock keepers on canals with manual locks. I see it as breeding the wrong attitude. You go on a boat you get to the lock and "thank goodness someone is there to do the lock". It presents the locks as being problems which need to be resolved rather than an enjoyable part of canal boating. But I'm biased as doing the locks is my favourite bit so if someone else is there they are taking away some of my pleasure. You simply have to say no thanks when they approach to help. On the other hand, it's a good chance for older people to enjoy boating for another few years when vollies man flights of locks.

I would rather see paid employees for that and things like lengthsmen but I realise that's not going to happen again sadly.

I think i'm with Kris on this issue - SOMETIMES volunteers can be a god send... especially when single handing.
BUT and it's a big BUT, of late when we've had a schedule to keep to (yes I know boating is a leisure r activity for most and not against the clock) but SOMETIMES the volunteers who THINK they are in CHARGE of a lock/flight, slow things dowwn by getting distracted talking to gongoozlers and slowing down the crew from working the lock - usually by not noticing the lock has finished emptying and opening gates etc.
OK so it' might only be 3-5 mins a lock of Wasted time" but when you're trying to get through a restricted hours section (like the landslide at Wovlerly) like we were the other day, we missed it by only about 15 mins.. ergo, lost the "time" we needed to get to Stourport.
NOT moaning as such, they're in the main useful but they can also be a hindrance... especially the ones that think they know how to "do it better" than us.
