Coots seem to be disappearing fast. We used to see lots ont he Kennet near Reading - I haven't seen any for years now. We went on holiday for a week on the Broads three weeks ago and travelled from Wroxham to Norwich and all the way up the River Ant. I didn't see a single coots There use to be thousands, probably the most commom birds around. As a matter of fact there were very few water fowl there at all. The Marsh Harrier population looks heathy though. It's quite odd, because on the face of it, coots should do well. They seem to be much better parents than ducks and their sharp beak and general aggression seems to equip them to defend their young against predators. Coots all disappear into the marshes in the summer, the winter they all reappear and form huge squabbling rafts of birds so not surprised you didn't see any..... wrong time of year. Phil

I'll tell you what is terrifying and that's heading along the river when a mob of swans start running along the water and take of right in front of you. This happened to us while in my dinghy, Chris swiftly put up her big brolly and crouched behind it whereas I just had to duck down behind her while clinging onto the tiller of the outboard. I felt the breeze as one passed too close for comfort. Phil Yeah - truly scary - but … how magical when you see them teaching the young ones how to do it - noisy, scary, but ….. pretty amazing - worth it all!
