We've heard a cuckoo this last week, for the first time in a couple of years. Beautiful and evocotive sound. Last time we heard one was down the GU around Rickmansworth area. Surprise, surprise, we heard one in industrial West Yorkshire at South Kirkby where Jane's sister lives We've also been seeing swallows over the last week. Any other sightings? Rog

Rog Noisy bugger that has been resident at Titchmarsh for what seems like years, along with a cacophonous racket making Woodpecker and a very greedy Common Pied Oyster Catcher. We also appear to have an Otter making an appearance, i have found a section of Eel carcass about 9" long left on the bank, Mrs Gazza came across a well chewed carp remains

We've heard a cuckoo this last week, for the first time in a couple of years. Beautiful and evocotive sound. "The secret crimes of the cuckoo. They are natureβs hustlers, cheats that have perfected the ultimate long con. They are born with an instinctive need to murder. The female cuckoo. Perching motionless in a tree she will lay in wait, monitoring the nests of her potential victims. When the host is away feeding, the cuckoo strikes, silently swooping into the empty nest and gobbling down one of the hostβs eggs so that her own, which she speedily lays, is offered better incubation. Her job done she zooms off, never to see her offspring again. The entire operation takes just 10 seconds." www.countryfile.com/go-outdoors/the-secret-crimes-of-the-cuckoo/

I always feel sorry for the little birds that must struggle to feed a much larger youngster....

We have a cuckoo or two on and around the marina and have done every year since we've been there (14 in my case). We also have otters that come into the marina, Egyptian geese, woodpeckers and we recently saw a pair of barnacle geese. The marina is the only place I've actually seen a cuckoo and I have to say they're not the most striking looking of birds. Debbie has just told me that on the wash, just outside the marina basin we have two pairs of shelducks and some tufted ducks.

Why not record this to your phone and set it as your alarm clock sound?
