The acid test: ask your self the following questions;
1/ Do you prefer to keep the majority of your money and spend it as you wish?
2/ Do you prefer to keep a lesser amount of your money, handing the balance to the government, for them to spend as they wish?
If you answer 1/ you're not a socialist, if it's 2/ you are.

You forgot
3/ Do you get all of your money from the government?

I disagree with Ricco's definition of 'socialist'. Capitalism is human nature and how things will always be run. It is very nasty in its raw form, so shoving some 'socialist' values into a capitalist system will temper it and make things nicer. However, injecting socialism is against natural laws - should the mentally/physically handicapped be cared for, or left for the lions to eat?

The Netherlands has a much higher level of taxation on income than we have in the UK but I wouldn't describe it as a socialist economy.

Capitalism has brought us the canals. Socialism brings us new knees off the NHS.
It's a comfortable combination.

"Please be wary of walking your dog in the field that comes off the hill after the Much Hadham ford (public footpath on the left if you’re going up). My dog was attacked by a black horse in there yesterday and I don’t know how he survived it. I’ve spoken to the owner so this isn’t to cause any trouble - just to warn other dog owners to be wary." "My two dog was in the Field with this so called ‘killer horse’ today and she didn’t batter an eyelid! And for the dog owner you did say to the owner of the horse that your dog wasn’t behaved on the lead, this incident has been massively exaggerated! I think some people just crave drama in their lives! HORSES ARE VERY INQUISITIVE ANIMAL and all the horses in that field would never harm a dog there are hundreds of dog walkers that go though that field me being one of them and I’ve never had a problem!" "To the person that walked through Much Hadham ford that me and my partner presumed was walking a dog at midnight tonight as we saw something dart across the road followed by torch light, if this is to be true please put it on a lead because at that time of night your dog may get run over as people don't drive slowly round this area that time of night. Secondly if you weren't walking a dog I would like to make much hadham (hadham ford housing) publicly aware that there is someone scouting around this time of night as when me and my partner went to check them out they seemed very shifty about us watching. If someone knows who this is and it's just innocent please say so however with so much burglary and break ins going on lately pretty silly to be scouting around at midnight to then head behind peoples houses and act shifty about it. Thanks" "This was me my dog was completely under control no need for a lead thanks not a burglar thanks" www.facebook.com/spottedmuchhadham/ I never knew Facebook was so fascinating.

Nope. I believe we should help the sectors of community who cannot help themselves but I believe those who can do but choose not to should live by their decisions. My incentive to continue working is to better myself and provide for my family, my husband and daughter share the same work ethic. We do pro bono work for those who need but can’t afford. I expect those who can afford but want something for nothing to look for that elsewhere. There are those on this forum and CWDF who have benefitted from my beliefs, I will not identify them, suffice to say they are not the members who identify themselves as my clients.
A friend of mine worked in both Russia an Romania and the pickle that both countries for themselves into was a lesson in why extreme socialism doesn’t work.

Romania had no national debt before it joined the EU.

Romania has lots of oil. "Romania was the largest European producer of oil in World War II. The oil extracted from Romania was essential for Axis military operations. The petrochemical industry near Ploieşti was bombed heavily by American bombers (see Operation Tidal Wave)." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petrochemical_industry_in_Romania

Sectors of the community who cannot help themselves: Currently in Britain the government identifies the disabled, families with children and the elderly as being these sectors. Would you agree with that?
