I do like looking at that tunnel entrance..if towpath still open I'm up there (hopefully) in a few weeks I'll have a real nosey at the side to see if any evidence of what was once there.

Couple more pictures found on internet. Seems to have been derelict for a long time as this looks fairly old maybe 60s? An older one with the steam chain tug which I guess was managed by whoever lived in the house. I guess once diesel came along the tunnel keeper was no longer needed Seems likely the house was filled in in the 1930s. I've already been wrong once today, I'll have another go at being wrong again. Are you sure on the dates. My brief insight into its history suggests the long chain attached to the steam tugs was attached to a diesel engine in the 30's so perhaps the keepers were still required. The house at the other end was built against the side. I presume this is no more too.

If either you or patty are coming please let me know I will come and help with the investigations if I can

There seems to be a fenced of area with trees and shrubs. Anything really that's out of the ordinary. A man hole etc. Theres a chance it could be buried under soil. There is also the chance there is nothing at all.

I had a quick look round and it seems to be just earth. I was not "tuned in" like you probably are so I could easily have missed somethig but my suspicion is that it has been filled in.
Maybe post ww2 is a more accurate estimate. In fact it could even have been filled with some materials from a bomb site but that would be proper speculating on my part !!

Thats the one I based my then and now on. Interesting to see the large iron weights there. They look like GJCCo Grand Junction items but there does not appear to be a crane able to lift them into boats. They are heavy !!. The sacks seem to be ballast as well possibly to help reduce air draft on boats which would be a tight fit in the tunnel? Does not look like coal. And the wheelbarrow is quite impressive as well... Thanks for posting a decent resolution copy thebfg I like the sign which says "free of charge. By order" The words "by order" really do it for me on signage. Love it.

I do need a day on London but hard to organise, it may be an over night visit.
We have a lovely court house to visit and a quick revisit to the sugar puff factory. There are a few deep shelters and closed underground stations that take our fancy too. So much to do uo there.

I do love an adventure. Son kitted me out for all my treks..have head torch, space blanket, whistle, goodies, new small rut sack, dry bag, waterproof jacket no compass though(he knew that'd be a waste)...though the guy on the fishing boat did attempt to explain.... Maybe need to bring a trowel to search for clues.. Good to go
