For those who don't know it it's a rock outcrop with the remnants of a castle on top of it, 2 miles or so from Scholar Green, lower Macc. Bit of a walk up there (800ft climb) but well worth it for the views over Staffordshire, the Cheshire plain and across to the mountains of north Wales. I'd post pictures but I'm a dinosaur, still haven't worked out how to do it.
Highly recommended!

The ruin is Wilbraham's folly ... it was built as a ruin as a kind of garden ornament. Rich folk huh!
John Wesley gathered crowds there to hear him preach in the formative days of Methodism.
Every year they have a run up the road that runs up Mow Cop on the Scholar Green side. It's called the Murder Mile.
Hard work to walk up it ... but to have a running race !
As you say, a great place to sit with a flask looking across the Cheshire Plain.

Jeez, I was struggling to get a good lungful on that last bit of road, 25% incline. If I had to run up there I'd need to order the ambulance in advance.

I've owned cars that would struggle with that hill. The Cloud is another excellent vantage point, and fairly easy to acces from bridge 61. You can walk most of the way up on lanes, but then turn off on a footpath to the summit. It's about a half hour walk from the canal (much quicker coming down ) but take a flask, and binoculars if you have them, and chill at the top with the views. You can't help but smile. Rog

I wanted to walk up it. Would of been lovely. But I settled for enjoying the view from our over night mooring, we walked to little moreton hall instead.

I was looking for my photo of Mow Cop but it must be on my hard drive. Instead here is Little Moreton Hall, just down the road. Visited courtesy of our NT membership. Worth the trip
