tbh - it's not difficult to do it yourself... just make sure you get some kind of controller... and thick cables from it to the batteries - the hardest part i found was tapping the threads in the roof but you can get around that with magnetic brackets.

Hi can anyone recommend an election to supply/fit solar panels on me boat? Ta As Mark says it really is a very easy job, I used self cutting self threading bolts that came with the brackets easy peasy

You are assuming I have some level of DIY skills, you obviously have not spoken to my partner who has a slightly different opinion LOL. But thanks for the reply....

My son and I r gonna have a go at fitting solar panels this summer on his van conversion... It will not be attempted until hours of y tube footage has been studied.. No doubt finished job will not be quite right..... We've done electrics, lined it out, put down flooring. He had a bed frame made which is bolted in and its all insulated and I think plumbing and solar next 2 tasks. Took a year so far. However, he, like me will always have a go. I'd like to say that together we make a good team but our finished botch it DIY efforts don't quite illustrate that statement We work on it here in between his treks and proper diving job

having said that, when my daughter got married she insisted that hubby should not attempt any DIY (prob'ly as a result of observing me bodging for 35 years). Their home is a palace (at a cost!!), including the garden - decking, astroturf lawn (2 very active footballing kids) and the tree-house. I never did find out what happens when a plug or a fuse needs changing.

Friend of mine rang and told me she'd called out the repair guy cos the filter blocked in her washing machine! She don't live close enough else I'd have gone and cleared it out.

Fitting panels is simple... mostly. Connect the panels together, 2 wires to the controller, 2 out of the controller to the batteries, inline fuse in one of them. The only difficulty I had was running the wires. The wires from the panels went though a mushroom vent then to keep things neat, between the roof of the boat and the t&g ceiling. This was tricky, I had to run the wires 6ft and there was polystyrene insulation in there. Finally managed it using a combination of a fishing pole, fishing line and a cut up coat hanger. Also getting the wires from the controller to the battery was tricky, the controller is in my bedroom, battery under the cruiser deck. Had to drill a hole through the bulkhead, which wasn't the easiest thing. Overall not a difficult job, in the scheme of things.

Hi can anyone recommend an election to supply/fit solar panels on me boat? Ta Ed Shiers at four counties marine is highly recommended by me, for competence, helpfulness and value for money. There ain’t many like him around. However as a consequence, he is very busy so it might be a while, and also you don’t say where you are located. He is reasonably ok with travelling but probably not to the other end of the country. Anyway, it’s worth a try fourcountiesmarineservices.com/home/

Christ that's hostel. Must be amazing still. When he got back he stayed 2 days at mine 'hidden' and we sat and watched every second of filmed footage and all the pics..no one else ..not even his siblings knew he was there. He's done this for the last 2 and it means so much that I get to see it all. The other 2 I did see the pics and footage but later down the line. I'm also keeper of his diaries and Borneo is a scary read, its all typed up now and he's editing. Hopefully he'll get it out there. He did say walking across Greenland in a straight line trekking day after day wasn't quite the same as the excitement of the others. Also they had prob with compasses..as u would! Baffin won't be this year as they are fund raising ...I'm hoping it don't happen as that really is a very hostile place with lots of polar bears

Hey there, glad to see that you're thinking of converting over to the solar panel. Your wallet will be happy (not in the beginning though). When I was starting out with the solar panels on my land I did, in fact, install the LG ones. So from my experience, I can't really say they were all that bad but, let's say they were pretty fragile, there was no point in always repairing them, constantly. Now can't imagine what it's like to have them on a boat. Plus the price wasn't as high as what you're maybe thinking. I would suggest you try another service that you will find to be way more reliable. Thanks to ones I trusted I got some durable long lasting solar panels. It's just something for you to consider or anyone else for that matter, since your asking for some advice, here you go. After a few years, I still stay quite happy with what I got. More financially stable in the wallet thanks to the brilliant saving system.
