Yes it was the lock that was closed plus only one lift was working. We came back the next day (once you've seen a salt mine ......)and lucky we did because of the downpour they closed the lift for a day. It was worth doing though the Victorians certainly knew a few things about engineering!!!

Was told by the chap operating it though that it runs on hydraulics now rather than water displacement. Was told each of the two rams cost over one million pounds. Made in Italy.
