I think its called it's called 'expression'......
Thankfully though we do have some young people ready to 'step up to the plate' when needed.
Even if the government sends them on a stupid wild goose chase in modern times.

I think we do our youth a disservice by suggesting they would be useless in adverse circumstances, as they have not been tested, how can we tell. I suspect that, when faced with a rock and a hard place many would do as well if not better than those who have gone before. Some would not fare well, but we forget there were scrotes around in the 1940s too.

Let the politicians and their children go to the front line first, to set an example like. And all the EU migrants to the UK second, to show their loyalty to their host country.
Isn't it great that the UK is sending child benefit abroad, just 'cos their dad is working in the UK? I do wonder why the governments of these receiving countries can't support their own kiddies.

So, you'll be glad to know, you'll be driving the troops to Moscow when it kicks off in northern Europe, as a migrant in Finland. Tin Hat on, tighten your chinstrap. What is that awful smell, did your bottom just squeak?

I am loyal to no country, as no country is loyal to me. Finland's politicians and ministers are as corrupt as any Russian. Finland's Parliament is a building full of spongers and liars.

And yet you expect migrants here to be loyal, maybe pass the tebbit test? What's that rank and rancid whiff of hypocrisy? What have you done to assimilate into Finnish culture and mores? Apart from taking a sauna and stealing a woman?

Agreed, but maybe people are better informed nowadays so they wouldn't be proudly joining the queue to be sent abroad and slaughtered as per WW1? For previous generations the only widely available info was government coercive propaganda.

For previous generations the only widely available info was government coercive propaganda. I think that is simplistic. You need to look at things in the eyes of people of that time .... 20/20 hindsight is easy. Both world wars were a result of pure aggression against a nation with which we had a pact to protect if attacked. The first WW was complicated by the crumbling of the Austro Hungarian Empire and the spiralling violence which crossed many conflicting peace agreements Initially it was a war fought by a small, professional, highly trained and well equipped British army. Although the American Civil war should have given a hint of what was to come, it was the first war fought on a grand scale using the weapons produced by the Industrial revolution. Nobody joining up in Kitchener's army knew of the horrors to come so "proudly joining the Queue to be sent abroad and slaughtered" is a distortion of what were high ideals at the time and an unfair comment on those men

Well said JohnV ... it is wrong to look back and belittle the genuine patriotism and valor of that generation. Politically, modern generations are perhaps more aware and generally better educated. But the choices made then have to be considered in context of the times. Rog

But the choices made then have to be considered in context of the times. Rog I didn't intend to belittle. People have a more realistic view of the worlds workings now and my point was that realism rather than cowardice would account for a greater number of refusals to join in. They know our governments routinely shit on the class of people who would be expected to swell the ranks. Loose, loose?

I would hope should a crises occur our youth would square up to any challenge..thinking of my mix bag of 4 I am sure they'd do their bit but perhaps not all on the active front... each has their own area of expertise though perhaps one of my lots skills would be questionable as to their use in crises. In any crises we need a mix bag of doers and leaders plus of course those in the wings ready should medical aid be required. We are not all warriors...to-days teens and those in their twenties like generations before are all mix bag. One hopes we don't ever need to face another World War.

Is there any reason why gypsies can't go the front line first? I mean... they like 'travelling'.

I hope there's none of the "you go to war lads, it's ok we know our place, we'll look after the house while you are away". Now that women are equal. (ish, job not fully sorted yet).
