Which bit of the Thames are you doing? Is it Oxford to Brentford or are you doing the Pool of London as well and going in at Limehouse? Eta or maybe turn right at Oxford and do Lechlade?. I did Cookham to Lechlade last weekend. Yes it is boring above Oxford but its very pleasant as well. You might even be lucky enough to meet a mystery TBer up there somewhere but I am not allowed to say where. Or whom?

No I was sworn to secrecy on both occasions that I met him and had a good natter.
Somewhere between Oxford and Lechlade I can't remember where it was as it all looks the same up there. Bendy bits of river with overhanging willows, identical locks and cow fields.
Ex boater.
Eta not one of the Thunderboat Massive in post count terms but a member nonetheless.

All academic now, we have 'won' that 6kg anchor off of Ebay. It's in Leicester, and we be going through anyway. Will think about the chain when we pick up the anchor. How deep be the Thames betwixt Oxford and Reading?

How deep be the Thames betwixt Oxford and Reading? Foxy, as you didn’t see my anchor in the end, here’s a short video of what we have. Nicholson’s guide for scale. I think it’s the 20kg one bought from Midland Chandlers. The plastic container keeps the warp and chain tidy.

How deep be the Thames betwixt Oxford and Reading? I suspect your real question is how much chain and rope for my anchor? When I bought mine some time ago (for the River Severn) I struggled to find any specified amounts, just lots of opinions, but I did find this for the Thames by the port of London Authority which is presumably the deepest bit of the Thames. www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=7&ved=2ahUKEwi4-sSrmf7iAhUBhlwKHXoQCHkQFjAGegQIAhAB&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pla.co.uk%2Fassets%2Fsb3of2014-dangerofinadequatesimplemaintenancechecks.pdf&usg=AOvVaw1Ab9OcRmRawftonU8SF8TWTo save you reading it, they recommend a minimum of 5m chain and 25m rope. - The chain I bought being 10mm, short link which is good and heavy and stores well in a bucket. Note they also state the anchor needs to be an appropriate side for your boat. I got a (from memory) 14kg Danforth and I don't go out when the river is in flood, just a current of a couple of mph, so my thinking is I don't need an anchor that is sized for a big boat in heavy seas heading for the rocks which is what most of the anchor tables seem to be for.

How deep be the Thames betwixt Oxford and Reading? So now you have a garden ornament what are you going to do for an anchor? You are going to need to store that inside as well, bright stainless will attract metal theives like magpies. It then becomes a bastard to deploy... Here is some stainless chain that will go nicely with it, about as much use as the anchor so no need to worry about it being the correct stuff. www.toolstation.com/marine-grade-stainless-steel-chain/p42342Two branches in Leicester www.toolstation.com/branches/leicester-freemens-commonwww.toolstation.com/branches/leicester-ravensbridgeFoxy you do suprise me, you get an abundance of good advice then go and ignore it.

Ah but, you've got an anchor as near as damn it the size foxy was recommended.....

I use my yot on the thames and generally see below 10ft on the sounder above Reading.
It varies but on the non tidal the deepest I have ever seen was 25ft near Shepperton. Just a big hole not a continuously deep river bed.
