Girl, newish boater, dropped her mobile phone in the river, just in front of our boat. Fishing for it with the magnet Magnetman gave us (thanks Maggers!) and poking around with our barge pole to see if we can feel it:
1. Are mobile phones magnetic? Or are we wasting our time fishing with it?
2. Can the phone info be retrieved from Three, her provider?
That's all for now. We decided to stop here another night anyway, because if the persistent rain, so have time to carry on fishing for her. We'll move our boat back also, in case the (quite strong) current has swept it under it.

No, yes and no, although she will be able to get a replacement SIM with the same number.
PS you might be able to retrieve it with a fishing net if you can find a friendly fish murderer.

No, yes and no, although she will be able to get a replacement SIM with the same number. So does that mean any info which was on her SIM card, or just that she can keep her old phone number? -which she says she doesn't know/remember! (surely her friends/contacts must know that ??!!)

anything stored on the phone or sim will be lost.
I got mine wet and it failed but it powered up so i was able to back it up before sending it off for repair.
if you send a phone of for repair all information will be deleted anyway.
it is probably waterproof. if she really wants it she should just jump in.

iIf its an iPhone, all her info / porn / dickpics / tinder contacts will be upoaded to her icloud account, just go into 3, get a replacement sim programmed to her phone number and put it in new phone...Hey presto all info back on phone...simples!
If its any of the android based shite....tough luck unless you can get the sim out the phone.
Have a fun night fishing for a knackered, now useless phone thats buried in about 4 inches of βnet disturbed & boatpole stirred upβ mud! π

Thanks andyberg - I'll tell her about the iCloud, but she said it was a Huawei (so... no big loss, eh?!).
This all started with her asking if she could close the flood gate so she could carry stuff from her car over it to the boat. There is a perfectly good road bridge just in front of the flood lock, so I don't know why she couldn't have used that, a few more steps, that's all. Anyway, we used our little boat to go forwards into a gap close to her car on the other side, loaded all her gear into our boat, and reversed back 100 metres. All good at that stage, but then tying our front rope (not at our request) she said her phone dropped into the water. Her gear safely taken to her 62' boat, and I have been fishing in a pattern but no luck. I thought straight away the phone is a dead 'un anyway after 5 seconds in the drink. Well, I tried to retrieve it. Have made a list of nearest Three stores for her - she has a car so not exactly stranded.
Let this be a warning to all those who are 100% dependent on their phones, and keep their whole lives on them. Write your contact numbers down on a piece of paper for gawd's sake - and have your pics turned into prints.

like Andy said. all my photos are backed up online and on my external drive. I don't have many contacts. but everytime I get a new phone I log into my accounts and most of the info is transferred to new phone anyway from online back ups.
I'd definitely wont like being sat on the bottom of a canal, that's for sure.
if its insured just report it lost and get a new sim card she will be up and running in a few days.

Smartphones are magnetic but not very. I can pick up my Motorola with a magnet the same as Foxy has but other brands may vary. I did pull out a Samsung with one of my bigger magnets a while ago.
I would expect to be able to use the sim after a dunking.
Maybe not.

what a sad situation, where the loss of an electronic toy causes such grief.
phones are for making calls - I have a good old clamshell - it makes calls and texts. what else could I possibly need?

Rule number one of boating for us.
Phones, wallets, purses remain inside the boat.
Never carried in pockets when actually boating.
Too easy when bending for ropes or stepping off and on, or working locks for pockets to eject their contents.
Bit late for the young lady, but worth considering.

what a sad situation, where the loss of an electronic toy causes such grief. I agree, the world has been dumbed down with these new-fangled electrickery devices. A captured audience. Smartphones almost as addictive as crack cocaine. Still, Badger, me old fruit cake, we'd get you out if you fell in the drink with the magnet attaching itself to the metal tag on your flea collar.

Her skirt would go over her head and I might see her nether regions.
