Rule number one of boating for us. Phones, wallets, purses remain inside the boat. Never carried in pockets when actually boating. Too easy when bending for ropes or stepping off and on, or working locks for pockets to eject their contents. Bit late for the young lady, but worth considering. Rog same here. connected to my bluetooth speaker that sits safely at the back. generally I'll just have talksport on especially if there is live sport on. |

Obvious issue with a smartphone device is that being a thin rectangular item it will tend not to drop straight down so could be quite a long way from the actual drop point.
I often considered the idea of building a metal stud detector into the end of a long thin pole with the led at the other end. That way you could scan the area and hopefully pinpoint any metal item before accurately using the magnet attached to another pole to retrieve it.
Would save the hit and miss situation you get with a corded magnet but of course it would be triggered by any metal items so if there was a lot of scrap about it would be almost useless.
Still quite a nice toy I wouldn't mind constructing.
I suppose an extra long litter picker with a stud detector in the end might be interesting.
at least it might help to actually locate the item.

I did take that into consideration, which is why we also moved our boat back to search where it had been in case the current had swept it who knows where. Have just spent an hour on Natalie's boat, 62' long, she is turning it into something nice. Built in 2004, Barrus Shire (not Shanks!) engine. I chopped some of our logs up into kindling for her. Her stove was on, like ours, which shows this June is a bit miserable weather-wise. |

Let this be a warning to all those who are 100% dependent on their phones, and keep their whole lives on them. Write your contact numbers down on a piece of paper for gawd's sake - and have your pics turned into prints. If it's a Huawei, it has been backed up in China👍😁 |

I think it was too late as soon as it hit the water. I was fishing with the aim of showing my gentlemanly stature and helping a damsel in distress (better than a tranny in this dress!), rather than in hope of hauling it out and expecting it to light up.
I wouldn't mind an endoscope, as sometimes I could put it in our water tank to see if there are any fish in there.

You can also have an occasional look at your prop, just to see if it needs a bit of brasso to make it shiny again, a nice job to do when the oil is emptying slowly during an oil-change. Peter. |

You could also check your rudder stock tube, though it may be too full of rust to get the endoscope up. |
