4 coats of primer. 2 coats of International Toplac undercoat. 3 coats of International Toplac gloss. Conditions not ideal perhaps but others seem to manage. We rollered on and tipped with a brush. Where the tipping off overlapped the previous tipped off chunk the colour was immediately lighter and still is 24 hours later. It's good and glossy as you can see and difficult to get a photo but hopefully you can see what I'm describing. Our conclusion is that due to the conditions we didn't have enough time to manipulate the paint, it was roller on a stripe not much wider than the small roller and immediately tip off. The lighter stripes are exactly where the tipping off overlapped, not where the paint overlapped, and were immediately visible as the brush travelled over the paint.

Ask the paint manufacturer? Pot not stirred thoroughly? Contamination? Paint, roller, brush or paint kettle Blooming due to moisture?

Ask the paint manufacturer? Pot not stirred thoroughly? Contamination? Paint, roller, brush or paint kettle Blooming due to moisture? Yes I will ask International. It's none of the above, it's definitely tipping off where the tipping overlap and not the paint overlap was paint tipped off say 30 seconds earlier and it wasn't dragging, it looks just the same just a lighter colour. If you could see it in the flesh you'd see a hard border and the lighter colour appeared immediately as the brush travelled up the paint. Very frustrating after 9 coats!

I doubt it. We will cross fingers and hope it sorts itself out as the paint dries a bit more over the next week or so but we need to get to the bottom of it before we do the next chunk.

I was told by a painter that adding Owatrol allows you to work the paint with a brush better ... and increases gloss finish but the down side is it takes longer to go off.
I know you're not happy but the finish looks terrific in your shot.

Rog Thanks, yes the surface finish is looking good, I'm pleased (relieved!) with that aspect and I know it will get even better as the paint dries flatter over the next few weeks, but in the flesh it's got obvious lighter stripes, very obvious on a computer too, but not so obvious on a phone.

We've decided it's definitely user error compounded by the dark colour. When I restored and spray painted old VWs if anyone had a hankering for black I'd talk them out of it because dark colours are the least forgiving showing up every flaw. With hindsight should have gone lighter and only stuck with the original colour to stop it looking daft during the years it'll take to get right round the thing. Plan A is now to add more thinners and go much faster. We'll practice on the other half of this side or we may end up with 10 failed coats on 1/4 of the boat and none on the rest! If we can crack it we'll go back to that chunk for a final coat. Thanks for the "looks good" comments - it nearly does.

It can take several weeks for the overlap to disappear, and it should do so. Don't panic yet. Did you thin it a little with white spirit?

Sorry to go a bit off topic, but has anyone seen or done a complete chrome/mirror type finish on a narrow boat?
I really like the old Airstream caravans from the 50s. I wonder if it would work on a boat?

BTW, has anyone mentioned the aluminium frontage of your boat looks like one of the aliens in Space Invaders?
