Mankind's greatest achievement or a load of old bollocks filmed in the Hollywood Hills?

My old Mum refused to believe it had happened I have no doubt it did, and was a miraculous achievement which created endless knock on positive effects. But mankinds greatest achievement ? Surely medical advances would be more appropriate for this sobriquet ... anti biotics ... transplants Rog

An elaborate and massively expensive hoax if it was one.....probably cheaper just to go to the moon properly.
Ive been to Kennedy Space centre a couple of times when the kids were younger and the scale of the thing is just massive including the Saturn 5 laid on its side.
For anybody interested and not bamboozled by the conspiracy theorists the new Apollo 11 film is getting good reviews. Made of original footage in a semi documentary way.
Hoping its still showing when we get home next week as its supposed to be a great view on the big screen.

Sometimes I think Mans greatest achievement is that we haven't murdered each other/blown the world up!

I think it would have been amusing if the astronuts had dropped their trousers and looking through telescopes from Earth you could have seen them 'mooning'.

Hmm, how can anybody prove that if the moon landings occurred or not? Well, you could get a really powerful telescope and take some pictures. But somebody will say 'it’s a fake'. So you could go to the moon yourself and see the base of the 'lunar interface module' and a moon rover or two. But somebody will say 'you're lying'. I hate that guy.
The best conspiracy theories tend to have a fairly high degree of credibility because it is next to impossible to ‘prove’ anything one way or the other. Obviously, you can’t ‘prove’ a falsehood. My personal favourite is the notion that Roosevelt allowed the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour to occur. It is of course complete piffle, but if it were true the implications are quite thrilling.
Most proponents of conspiracy theories I have encountered tended to have been unwashed, dope-smoking law-breaking twats who seemed to me to be making every attempt to prove that the world is a corrupt and cynical place (which to some extent it of course is) in order to justify their anti-social and often criminal behaviour. After all, if the government is corrupt, why shouldn’t I behave any way I like?
For every objection the theorists have about 'proving' the moon landings were faked, there is a very rational explanation to the contrary. If you bother to look.

That's not a very nice thing to say about Rog's Mum.

One of "those" occasions when everybody who was around at the time can tell you exactly where they were and what they were doing.
I watched it on tv at the US airbase at U Tapao having scrounged a lift from Sattahip early enough in the morning to see it live (on the 21st July 9.30 am for us)

I was in bed. Asleep.
Good post, Mr Nemesis. You seem quite sane and rational.

Q. Why has there never been a woman on the moon?
A. It doesn't need cleaning yet.

One other thing - in hindsight, the name given to the programme, 'Apollo', was very apt indeed. Presumably the doubters would be the Dionysians.

My old Mum wasn't a follower of Neitsche, a student of Greek mythology, or an unwashed dope smoker ... with 6 kids she didn't have time. I remember seeing black and white pictures of the landing and being incredibly impressed at 12 years old, but my Mum refused to believe it had happened even then. The thing I remember most was trying to impersonate the speech, with all the clicks and hisses Rog
