If nothing else the space race gave us Tefal Saucepans.... An incredible time to be a scientist or engineer 👍🍻 They invested loads of money to get pens to work without gravity too...meanwhile the Russians used pencils... The Ruskies have always done down and dirty very well The R7 has given sterling service for well over half a century 👍 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R-7_(rocket_family)For a superb insight to the two different approaches to trying to reach for the moon read Two Sides of the Moon, David Scott and Alexi Leonov ISBN 9780743231626

My old Mum wasn't a follower of Neitsche, a student of Greek mythology, or an unwashed dope smoker ... with 6 kids she didn't have time. No disrespect to your mum intended. Actually when you try and imagine just the distances involved it becomes astounding, to say nothing of the amount of energy required to place any object in space. On that basis alone I would forgive anyone's disbelief. I will never forget the look on my mum's face when I told her that the sun was a star. Also, try and imagine just how far one light year is. I dare you. It's truly mind-boggling, I can't do it. And the next time you think aliens are among us, consider that the next-nearest star to us is Proxima, at around four(!) light years.

Voyager 10 is doing about 88,000 miles per hour, light speed is what 186,000 miles per second ? Its a little bit more but whats a couple of hundred miles an hour between friends? And if anybody is interested I have both the original radio play and the tv series of THGTTG. So anyway, thats 186,000 x 60 x 60 x 24 x 365 = ... a really really big number that my puny mind cannot comprehend.

I recorded it on reel to reel ..... used to always make sure I was home in plenty of time to get the tape set up. An (ex) mate borrowed it and claimed that it was stolen from his car ...... never really believed him, I was sure he flogged it (Akai X5 with the outriggers for 9" reels)

Like most audio it sounded much better in analogue than in digital. However I suspect that the whole thing could be fitted onto a single CD, but definitely a DVD.

Yeah, you can just imagine aliens arriving in Doncaster and thinking.... let's go home! Donkey put a link here about 3 months ago, solar system distance - it was worth watching. Put it up again, Donks!

Lost in Space (1960s TV series) much better than Hitch Hiker's Guide. Dark Star movie fairly amusing.
Sub atomic particles do move faster than the speed of light (positive and negative bosons for instance when forced to spin in the opposite direction) so nipping across to Alpha Centauri for your fags because they're 4d cheaper than on Jupiter may indeed be just round the corner shop.

If you pay cheap, you GET cheap. Or as our european friends the French say, pay cheap, buy twice!

R100 versus R101 sometimes works the other way
