Maybe pop the money into an account every year. If you do need to call someone there should more than enough to cover it

I'm just struggling with the thought of spending £175 for a basic call out service (bronze) plus £50 excess for each visit. I know security is worth it but at the moment I only make one trip a year. However, if I break down on that trip Im stymied! It looks like there are no referral benefits to be had, so now I'm thinking I might as well save that money and try to find a local engineer if the worst happens. Thanks for the comments. I'm on the retainer level £65 (although came free with the insurance) + £40 call out plus parts - I see it as a 'get out of jail card' rather than a full breakdown service. But even on the retainer level of £65 its plus the addition of £50 excess for each visit/claim, plus the £45 callout charge, plus the cost of any parts. So £160 for the privilege of being able to telephone them!

I think these days with internet access, finding and making contact with local boat yards is so much easier ... but of course they may not have someone immediately free to help.
Insurance is always an expensive option I'm afraid.
Don't they do some kind of retainer membership, so you can call if necessary but with minimal outlay ?
Rog
ETA Sorry ... just noticed you mentioned retainer

Getting someone to come out to the boat is almost always going to cost a callout charge. So I view it as £65 for the privilege/reassurance of knowing I can call someone out - even if they are just as likely to be as incompetent as a 'random person who I've picked from the internet'....
Just my take on things.

Rog ETA Sorry ... just noticed you mentioned retainer Yes, I think I'll take the risk and as you say try to find a local engineer who would be prepared to call. ...even if I have to wait. RCR will do similar to AA and call and repair if you are prepared pay an extra £100 to join at callout but thereafter I would only be allowed to join at the Silver level entry of £210!

I believe the £50 excess relates to the replacement parts cover. About three years ago our Hurth gear box failed unexpectedly. We were at Anderton and were invited into the ABC marina for two nights where the drive plate was replaced and a PRM gear box fitted at a cost to us of just £50. Great service ... but not cheap on an annual subscription basis (two hundred and odd quid a year including replacement parts cover). Not needed to use them for three years ... but the subscription's still the same. Insurance is an expensive waste ... until you need it Rog

Yes, it is in the terms and conditions for each level... Retainer fee level of £65 is :quote: "Members pay the first £50 of each claim (If you do not pay the ‘excess’ you will be liable for the full repair bill.)" the £65 does not include the callout fee of £45, and retainer level has no replacement parts cover. I'm sure RCR will have competent engineers its just that £160 before any parts might then be needed is quite a lump! Even at Gold membership of £280 annuually its also £50 excess for a claim. Yes I know its the same for all insurance and breakdown services but on reflection I'd rather save it in my bank account than in theirs. At least until I breakdown and cant find an engineer for less than £300!

"Members pay the first £50 of each claim (If you do not pay the ‘excess’ you will be liable for the full repair bill.)" the £65 does not include the callout fee of £45, and retainer level has no replacement parts cover. I suspect that might be legalese gobbledegook.
When I called them out it was £45 callout + parts - so I did pay for the full repair bill (or did I...?)

But did you also pay the £65 retainer level fee? ...so plus £45, plus parts. Go to go to work now but its all here, www.rivercanalrescue.co.uk/breakdown-cover/help-me-decide/#tab1 if Ive read it wrong? (entirely possible, I hate legalese!)

I've been a gold member since 2004, and have their parts cover too. It's reassuring to know you have someone to call when things go wrong. I don't know anything about referral links though ... looked at RCR 's page and can't find anything there either. Rog I'm just struggling with the thought of spending £175 for a basic call out service (bronze) plus £50 excess for each visit. Thanks for the comments. £135 for basic service = 4 callouts last year when I last looked. Our insurance company said £65 for 3 callouts, so we had that. I asked RCR if we could have 3 callouts for £65. They said no. And it's their own offer via insurance companies. Idiots.

RCR gives the jobs to local mechanics. Sometimes they are top blokes, sometimes they are clueless berks - as I witnessed last August in Penkridge, when eventually the two clueless berks got sent packing because they couldn't work out what to do, and a proper mechanic from the local boatyard was summoned. Why are mechanics always men? Come on, wimminz, claim your rights to 'Equality' and get your hands dirty!

I have a copy of a letter from CRT demanding I pay an overdue invoice for £2415.60 within 7 days - no reason for why I owe them the money or prior notification, all my contact details customer number etc are ok. My view of CRT might change come Monday...

Why only a copy? Where's the real letter?!
