When things get off to a bad start bargemast , human behaviour takes over ... just how it is. That's one of the guys we dealt with last year and he was a good bloke. Nick's a good bloke ... but I guess the volockie may be telling the tale of how he 'met a right one today' . Rog

"Just as we were approaching the lock mouth, one of the volunteers suddenly appeared on the lock bridge, shouting “STOP” in a loud commanding voice and holding his palm up in a stop signal. It transpired that he felt taking two boats into the lock simultaneously was a bad idea (even though it is in fact best practice) because one of the gates tended to stick a bit when fully open." Did you know one of the gates was sticking? How did you get both boats simultaneously into this particular lock with one gate sticking? You do not say! Sometimes it's best to see WHY a volockie has made his actions. I feel, in this case, he was doing you a favour, and your moaning letter about him is a bit mean. Last time we did the Wigan flight (admittedly a long time ago) we did it with another boat side by side both entering and leaving each lock together. Looking back it would have been better to tie the boats together, but that said there was ample room either side. A gate would have had to be stuck well open to stop two boats entering a lock.

The guy that you're so very unhappy with looks a lot like the guy that other boater were really pleased with, and he seems to be a nice guy on their video. My glasses need a bit of cleaning, but I do think that it's the same guy that you can see here starting at 7:08 if you don't want to watch the whole video. Peter. Those two characters are better known as "foxes afloat" I follow the well made vlogs of "Foxes Afloat" and really like the way they make them, they haven't bored me yet. Peter.

the volockie may be telling the tale of how he 'met a right one today' . Who will contact him to let him know he's featuring on Thunderboat this evening?! Are CRT canals 'public places' from which you may freely take photos?

I’m sure boaters who didn’t really know what they were doing/were single handed and a bit infirm/ didn’t mind being told what to do, would be quite happy to be assisted by Mr Control Freak. But we like to do things our own way, for which we pay CRT approaching £900. We don’t pay them £900 so some random blokes can come and feed off our boating like parasites.

But I still think that it was his fault for introducing himself by shouting an inappropriate command to me. First impressions etc!

C&RT training is shite - they don’t cover PPE correctly - no crotch straps mean those automatic life jacket are next to useless. Tell the volunteers to dress correctly next time you encounter them - the old fella at the back looks as though he has one but has not even bothered to buckle his life jacket up 🤦🏼♂️ Good on you all for enjoying a wet old day - bar for one silly old git 👍 Good Heavens! Its You! Now I understand the anguish. ?

We came up the top five locks of Atherstone a couple of weeks ago.
At the top lock there was six volunteers ... we didn't have to do a thing ... the previous four, two of which are in sight of the top lock, we were on our own.
I suppose we have to accept that they are volunteers and accept help if we choose and if it is offered.
Human nature being what it is, we're destined to encounter odd behaviours occasionally.

He seemed nice enough in the video, but he's not an old hand at the job, as he told the guys that this was only his second year. Probably because your boat was too shiny, he may have thought that you were brand new boaters that needed his advice to keep their boat shiny a bit longer Peter.

At the end of the day, volockies may offer help & advice, but you do not have to follow it unless there is a specific reason.Your boat, your responsibility, your choice. We've been lucky thus far & only met helpful, none bolshie vollies-apart from one who was a bit quick on the paddles & I asked him to check if I was ready.Paul also vollies, but only does what folk want him to.At the end of the day,it's your boat & in many cases your home.

Was this volunteer named Joe with a prominent moustache? If so, we encountered him at the halfway point too 3 weeks ago. Didn't let him bother us too much but Jeannette reckoned he was a bit of a misogynist, or maybe he just didn't like woman with opinions. However, we were very happy to have help up the flight and all the other volunteers were very pleasant and helpful. No volunteers at Johnson's Hillock when we came up but very happy to have them at Blackburn, especially so as being on our own. We did initially upset one of them when he started to open the ground paddle on the wrong side and got shouted at but he was OK when Jeannette explained why. Anyone else see the resemblance ?
