Reservoir dam imminent collapse. Emergency services officer concerned that his escape boat seems to have become separated from its outboard motor. And meanwhile two locals look across at beer shop wondering if they can get in and grab some.

" Duncan Fife lives on top of the reservoir in the old Reservoir Keeper's house, said: "We have been telling them for years that the spillway has been clogging up with plants trees and weeds. Just now they are starting to clear it. Why don't they maintain it?" "
Aha!

I see they have closed Marple and Bosley locks. Am I thick thinking that using locks is rather a good way to release water from 'upstream' in fairly quick time? Or at the very least, it won't hinder said release, should that be desirable, as it is now.
What possible benefit to anyone is closing the locks?

Elfinsafety and desire not to be sued when your boat surfs down the entire Bosley flight on its own, is what is behind it.

If the Trust is concerned about high water levels on the canal it should evacuate people from boats in the more local area, not close a flight of locks that is 21 miles away. Strikes me that the Trust perhaps feel they need to be doing something, even if that something is of no practical use whatsoever.

Publicity?
"Canal trust races against time and saves countless houses from being destroyed by flood water while ensuring safety of boat owners"
That sort of headline.

Is a little bit like how it was being portrayed on tonights news on ITV. Cept it was a guy from the Environment Agency appointed as the spokesperson speaking to camera....... Make of that what you will.

Are there any old embankments about with badly maintained overspill weirs around there ? Maybe near an aqueduct or something?

You could be right, there are over 3000 women in Whaley so the chances are less than half a percent. Mind you, those are much better odds than winning the lottery, and that gets won most weeks.
