Everybody I know with a story about a white knuckle ride on their boat it's been on this bit of water. Well thank you for the comforting words! We did it in 1974 when Chris & I & one other were all about 18 (sans parents). Don’t remember anything dramatic.

Everybody I know with a story about a white knuckle ride on their boat it's been on this bit of water. that bit of the river demands respect ........ I shot Cawood on the flood with about 18" clearance but was talking to them and getting heights on the vhf so it could have been lifted if needed (there are pontoons above and below .... but I wouldn't have liked to try and round up and get on them at last moment .... with a strong tide distinctly hairy)

Don’t remember anything dramatic. with small tides and not a lot of fresh it is quite a pleasant run and there are several videos about showing people having a grand time under those conditions ....... you seem to think it is always like that ..... well it ain't

There must be quite a lot of water in the rivers up that way anyway at the moment?

There must be quite a lot of water in the rivers up that way anyway at the moment? There is, but it is reducing. Still 2 or 3 days to go to our intended transit. My mate Chris is a couple of days ahead of us, I’ll give him a ring and see how he is getting on.

High at the moment, but subsiding. Anyway the nice man at Selby lock said he didn’t advise going out in a narrowboat on Monday due to spring tides, best to wait until Wednesday, which is what we’ll do.

You can't do better than setting about that river full of over confidence and complacency based on a one off experience in ideal conditions with the tides and weather at their most benign !

You forgot to mention “one off experience 45 years ago, which you can’t really remember”. Anyway, it must have been a 2 off experience because we came back the way!
