Yes it would have to be heating oil bought in bulk. I believe the minimum order is 500l so a bundled tank would be the way to go I reckon . One of the neighbours on the mooring where my barge is has 3 x 200 litre drums on the pontoon and has successfully had deliveries of Kero. I was a bit surprised but they did succeed. This was on a floating pontoon so hose passed across a waterway. It does seem to vary from company to company. I was thinking of getting a proper bundled tank but one of the portable ones, so I can lift it on and off my back deck. |

Its about Ā£2.50 a day so yes a bit more expensive than the equivalent smokeless like Brazier for example. Pretty sure smokeless solid fuel is cheapest unless you can bunker large volumes of heating oil and pull the price down. Thats ignoring the house coal option which is probably even cheaper but very dirty. I keep thinking of doing something similar, but the cost of running a diesel stove is the issue. But Ā£2.50 a day isn't too bad, but that is in London which is a couple of degrees warmer than outside of the m25. I have a Bubble PJ stove running radiators and hot water cylinder. I installed when my wife was ill but it really came into it's own after my operation and the first winter when I was recovering. I couldn't use the Rayburn as there was no way I could carry the fuel it needed, so the Bubble was my only heating. As I was unable to be active and in poor health the temperature was kept a lot higher than I would need now and I got through about 1200 litres of red. This last winter, (which was milder although I'm in Yorkshire) I have used a lot less. I was just checking the fuel tank this morning and I am down to about 200 litres that means I have used about 800 litres this winter with a very small proportion of that for generator and boat moving. I have about 750 litre capacity but I do intend to try and double that (then if red becomes a problem I can split the tankage and buy heating oil for the bubble) I expect that Sabina is a slightly bigger area to heat (but not a lot) although as an old git I need it fairly warm  I get my delivery by road tanker in 500L lots |

I had a bad flue last winter (the first for quite a few years.) it only lasted a couple of weeks but keeping the stove in became a struggle. It made me think about it, I've even gone as far as buying a kobola old Dutch stove. But ve not installed it yet. |

IBC Intermediate Bulk Containers look like an interesting solution. Except most fuel companies won't deliver to them as the taps start to leak when they have had diesel like substances in them. |

That's interesting. But they are happy to deliver to non specific aged mild steel drums which could easily have serious corrosion problems. Or maybe the drums have year stamps on them To be honest I have never investigated it as not a big oil user anyway. I just noticed that the man delivering gasoil by van had one of the IBC things in his Transit. However I do know that he also has a much larger tank in a barge where the bulk deliveries are pumped into. All interesting I could see more people looking at bulk supply options in future if the tax situation becomes dodgy. |
