This pound is often kept at a low level even when all the feeder reservoirs are full to the brim. It didn't present any problems when I had the day hire boat up there but the restaurant boat opposite (71'6") couldn't wind at New Mills if the water was more than 6" down. The owners were continuously complaining to CRT about this, probably more than once a week, on average. The speculation is that keeping the water at 'maximum' would likely result in a breach. Yes it's just speculation, by why else would resources be limited when said resources are plentiful? It may be something as simple as CRT only check the reservoir every couple of days, and if the canal is a bit low, top it up whilst they are carrying out their inspection, then gone for a couple more days. I can't believe in this day and age the water level is not monitored by a computer miles away. I do realise its CaRT, so they probably do send someone to look. Do we know how the damage was initially found, was it the local photos that brought its attention to everyone or did say an over full alarm go off and someone went to have a look and found it.
