Sorry - don’t do this often (rant!), but we just boated through Nuneaton - what an utter shi%hole! Had to swerve to avoid a floating armchair in the cut, a really big one - welcome to Nuneaton! The whole place stinks of a heady mix of sh%t and skunk weed, canal literally strewn with rubbish and plastic and dead fish. Passed a little filthy “trail boat” plastic thing, moored next to a substation - and someone has obviously been crapping in a plastic bag and chucking it through the fence there - I was walking next to the boat by this time 🤢 I grew up in Hinckley but I never understood why Nuneaton was such a scum-trench!
We just got back to our mooring at the bottom of the Ashby after 10 lovely days up to Great Haywood and back- I guess I’m just a bit hacked off at having to return to “real life” and am taking it out on Nuneaton really.. but other, less affluent places take a bit more pride in themselves and their surroundings?
Honestly, if I didn’t HAVE to be here to look after mum, I’d just be heading straight back oop north..
Rant over...

Sounds like the final day into Manchester on the Rochdale, something to just put up with, hold your nose and whack the throttle on. Or just cadge a toke and chill.

It's stretches like Nuneaton that make you appreciate the rest Now if I got on a train with 6 donuts, and got off still with 6 donuts, where would I be? Rog

I caught the bus from Hartshill into Nuneaton - and the bus driver asked "are you sure?".

Even Tamworth gives a reasonable account of itself canalwise.. took a wander to the Castle on a rainy windy day and was pleasantly surprised by the town 😁

I like Nuneaton. Super strength lager is easy to find and very competitively priced.

Even Tamworth gives a reasonable account of itself canalwise.. took a wander to the Castle on a rainy windy day and was pleasantly surprised by the town 😁 Yes, BUT - I agree - well worth the walk - but the Castle isn't anywhere near the canal and if you (and I) had never bothered to make that effort we would never have known. Where was the information board alongside the car dealerships? So, can't agree the canalside presence is all that - particularly now the old pub at Glascote has become a shop and the steps there are a bottle, can and needle repository - my last visit there coincided with an ambulance and crowd gathering - Steve H would be ........ Sadly, none of these towns seem to make anything of what they have so close and expensively advertised for them by CRT. So sad. Glad you had a good trip out, lampini. Sincerely hope things go well for you in the real world this week. Met x

Thank you Met, you are very kind! And I agree, much more could be made of their canalside - I did think some of the gardens were lovely tho...
