the biggest source of radioactive contamination from Chernobyl in the larger surrounding area was from Caesium the half life of caesium isotopes is about 30 years .... the accident was in 1985 so returning to "normal" is fair Β That's the half life.Β After 30 years there's still 50% left!Β After 60 years there's 25% left, and so on.Β When Chernobyl had its meltdown Lapland reindeer farmers were compensated generously as radioactive Caesium was reckoned to be on the soil of northern Finland for something like 15,000 years.Β However, looks like they took their compo and are still flogging 'polluted reindeer meat' as the sales of it have never stopped. Β Who knows the truth of the matter? Β Anyway, where's the compensation from the Russians, eh??!! Father Christmas was well pleased with his new glow-in-the-dark Reindeer. Meant he could travel faster and avoid potential collisions due to improved visibility of the hanimals.

All of the pictures I posted were of animals which have suffered a genetic mutation in the near-vicinity of Chernobyl. There is no evidence that wildlife local to Chernobyl is suffering a greater incidence of cancer because no study has been undertaken. The wildlife population has increased because there is no competition from human activity. This is, in one sense, 'returning to normal'. Maybe normal might of been the wrong word. But the area is starting to improve. I know quite a few people that have been, either officially or non officially. And it seems they all agree it's not as bad as it should or could be The new cover means they will start deactivate and remove the radioactive material one day, which can only be good. At least I got the right place name. I hadn't seen those pics before. I think I have said before but after the accident we had two children from there stay with us. Something my sisters scout group arranged and fundraiser for. Two or 3 weeks they lived with us. I learned to speak some Russian. They had lots of days out. It was about 30 kids that came over.
