Just in case I can't this Mikuni working(and probably delaying the inevitable) does anyone know the rough cost of changing to a Webasto? I have a calorifier and 2 double and 3 single rads. Normally I heat the water when I am cruising and only use the mikuni to heat the rads. I sometimes use the mikuni for heating the water by running it for half an hour or so and turning the rads off. Mostly though it is for the rads and I just have a switch by the bed to turn it on about half an hour before I get up. I have a wall mounted thermostat but don't use it as the rads have individual controls and I like different rooms at different temperatures, E.g a warm shower room but a cold bedroom.
I will, of course, ring around to get quotes but obviously asking on here could give me a benchmark. Thanks
PS. Given everything else is in place can it be fitted DIY with minimum skills?

It's worth looking at the Chinese clones. Apparently (not personal experience) some of them are actually quite good.
I know someone who replaced an MX40 with a Webasto. I don't think there was much installation required as it is a broadly similar unit.
Same goes for Chinese gear but the Webasto are far more expensive.
TRVs on the radiators are better than a thermostat. Direct switching thermostats cause problems for these units because they may go into shutdown too often. It's not ideal to fire these on and off too regularly.

Do you know where I can check out these Chinese ones?

I don't use it but I think there might be a facebook group discussing them. If you are an fb user it could be worth doing a search.
Apparently people do quite technical tests on them and work out which are the good ones.
I seem to remember the name Planar was a good one.

These heaters are very simple as you find out when you dismantle one. JubJub: I thought from your other thread that it was a burnt fuse holder in the supply? It usually points to a poor connection elsewhere when the holder burns but the fuse doesn't blow. Hope that helps.

It does seem odd that it does nothing whatsoever.

Well I did think it was the inline fuse holder so I replaced it and that returned power to the switch but nothing happens when I switch it on. I spoke to Mikuni today but all they could suggest was things I have already done. They did say that it would be unusual for 2 control units to be faulty. I am going past Streethay wharf next week and they said they would check them out. I'm just considering my options in looking at alternatives. I do go to the boat over winter, sometimes going out on it so I would like to have some heating!!

A wet forced air diesel heater is a nice thing to have if it's working. Hot water and radiators how pleasant. And if only used to take the chill off in the morning or when arriving at boat they are not greedy.
Definitely improves the comfort level on board.
How do you know the switch wiring is correct if "nada" happens ?

I only use it for that purpose really, to take off the chill or a quick warm up for a shower other than that I get plenty of hot water when cruising. Because I wired it the same way and the light comes on whereas it didn't before....

Did you get round to disconnecting the main power supply from the battery and leaving it disconnected for a bit then reconnecting it?

Well don't suppose I have anything to lose doing that. Answered the fuse thing above.
