I haven't played with the MX40 for a while as I use other heating systems but I definitely think there is a relay in the control box which clicks when you switch it on from the remote switch. Then the unit goes into the initial tests which include motor resistance for the air motor and the water pump. If either of these tests fail then nothing else will happen but there will still be the click from the relay. At least I think so.
If this click doesn't happen it seems to be a connection problem. It's not a loud click you have to be right beside the control box when you operate the switch to hear it.
I could be wrong but that's what I remember from playing with the MX40 a few years ago.

I only use it for that purpose really, to take off the chill or a quick warm up for a shower other than The light in the switch? Did you get round to disconnecting the main power supply from the battery and leaving it disconnected for a bit then reconnecting it? Yes the switch is black with an integral red light. When you initially switch to on the red light flickers and you hear the Mikuni fire up,once it is running fully the red light stops flickering and stays on. When you turn it off the red light stays on until the unit completes it's cycle and then goes off.

I think if it was failing to start but was powered up correctly there would be a flashing light code.

Change the connections to the switch around? No they only work in a set sequence.

On neither of them?
Are you sure there isn't one where that little circle of holes is?

On neither of them? Are you sure there isn't one where that little circle of holes is? Yes but I will check again tomorrow. It's been a bit difficult as we are travelling and the unit,as with most things, does not have brilliant access plus the switch is in the bedroom. I might take the whole thing out and give it a good going over. Nothing to lose really It is 13 years old so that's why I am considering replacing it.

Have you got the old control unit as well?
13 years old is quite young for one of these. I think they stopped making them about 8 years ago.
Stick it on eBay if you do replace it. Someone will want it.

It was disconnected while I was rewiring and I have had it disconnected since- no luck but why do you suggest that?

Looked at the Planar bit new to the market to get many reviews which,on the whole, are mixed although slightly more positive than negative. The Russian one rather than the Chinese copies gets better comments and I have been quoted approximately £1000 fitted with a 3 year guarantee. Difficult decision really. There was another one I came across called Wallas, anyone heard of that?, But it was mega expensive.

Wallas are really good. @gazza has one not sure if he's reading this. It's a 40D I think he's got.
The reason for disconnecting the main power lead is to reset the control box if it has locked out. I'm not sure if they do lock out on these units.

It is indeed a 40D - quality bit of kit, it needs to be at the prices they are now! If you can afford and are not likely to change boats a Wallas is a good investment, relatively simple and very reliable. My mate is going the other end of the scale with a cheap planair as he intends on selling the boat eventually, you can fit a couple of planairs to the cost of one Eberspacher or Webasto blown air heater. For hot water there isn't much to beat a Hydronic or Thermotop. Paying attention to the installation is key, they are reliable if installed correctly.
