Basicly the same, just different name for something that has a hybrid power train. Both Autocar and Top Gear refer to it as a 'plug in hybrid' but then what would they know? Admittedly Vauxhall dont like the term though. The difference between a hybrid of which I have two of and a range extender is simple, a range extender uses the electric motor all the time whereas a Hybrid has an ice engine and an eletric motor that work in ether tandem like on my Honda's or either the ice engine or electric motor. Examples of range extenders are Vauxhall Ampera, BMW I3 rex and BMW I8. Amperas went out of production a few years ago, they were very expensive but very well built by Cadillac in the USA, My daughter has one and a friend called James who has the chevy version they are seriously good cars and worth buying secondhand with low mileage If pure electric is wanted for me its the Tesla model S it is the best electric car made, and well worth buying seconhand
Your constant praise of Tesla has driven me to visit autotrader to see what is for sale, second hand wise. Two things struck me immediately. One that they are very expensive. Secondly, they look very bland, both inside and out. They look rather cheaply finished, switch gear in particular. Not a car that I look at and think I’d love one of those. They could use a new stylist.

Yes I understand how an Ampera works. It is a type of hybrid, but its a hybrid none the less in that it has two power sources. The generally adopted term as adopted by top gear, auto car and others for a car powered as such. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_VoltThe Chevrolet Volt is a plug-in hybrid car manufactured by General Motors, also marketed in rebadged variants as the Holden Volt in Australia and New Zealand, Buick Velite 5 in China, and with a different fascia as the Vauxhall Ampera in the United Kingdom and as the Opel Ampera in the remainder of Europe
I do agree though it is an interesting vehicle but very pricey for what is essentially an Vauxhall Astra. It is only a four seater rather than five though due to the battery location. I suspect that contributed along with price to its rather limited up take.

The Tesla model X is a toweringly ugly vehicle.
I took the kids into the tesla shop at canary wharf. The cars are much too flash.
I think if my grandfather was still alive he would refer to a Tesla as a "Jew boy's flash box".
That was his way of describing Jaguars in the 1950s. He was a Lagonda owner.

Personally I like the look of the Tesla X.
Stick a nice 3 litre turbo diesel in one and I might consider one........oh and shave a fair few grand off the price.

I don't really like the X6. If I were spending good money on a motor it would be a G Wagen every time. Probably not a cheap car to own but awesome bit of kit.

In 30 years of working on cross country pipelines in locations as varied as English farmland, desert dunes, tropical rain forest and rugged mountains I have never come across a G Wagen. The vehicles preferred by the industry (including Germans) are Hilux, Land Cruiser, Land Rover (all types) and Nissan Patrol.

That's interesting.
I had a 1994 Land Rover defender for a while. The build quality was atrocious on it. Pile of junk.

James Mays's 'cars of the people 4x4's' was repeated last night and is an interesting watch. Charting how much conflict in the world has been responsible for the development of the 4x4 vehicle. And how much benefit Toyota got from the free advertising from the use of the Hilux by the likes of ISIS as they featured so prominently in news reports. I'd really like an original Land Cruiser. www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1159026

As James May said in his program last night 'if you want to go into the jungle, get yourself a Land Rover, but if you want to come back out, get a Land Cruiser'. Ive had two Discoveries, a 300tdi and a newer td5. The 300tdi was rubbish but I stuck to the brand and the td5 was much better. I suspect some people stick to the brand through mis placed loyalty.

In AFCENT we had numerous 4 x 4s from different countries invariably the G wagons would bog themselves in and have to be rescued with a defender! Like Martin I love Landcrushers they are awesome reliable beasties
