We came home to discover that the lounge tv (an old 40" Toshiba) on/off switch has become faulty ... randomly either refusing to turn on, or in the middle of the night turning itself on without assistance etc. It is very old so we considered calling for a new one. I'm not a fan of tv, and certainly not into 'technology' so I was surprised to discover that the vast majority of televisions are now 'Smart'. This means they operate linked to wifi ... but as we do not have home wifi (not even got a house phone) this is useless to us, but does add about £150 to the price. Jane has a DVD player and digital recorder linked to the existing tv by scart leads, so we were interested in a none smart tv with two scart plug capabilities. Turns out scart leads are old technology and have been abandoned ... we were advised the 'best thing to do' was chuck the lot away and buy everything new. So much for ending consumerism and saving the planet ... the world's run mad Rog

This is exactly the problem with our consumerist society.

And that is the way the cookie crumbles. Actually scart was obsolete at least four years ago so it seems you have had your money's worth. Try 'Richer Sounds' for a possible replacement, the best deals are paradoxically in the shop and not online.

There is a guy local to us who claims he can fix such problems easily to avoid people chucking good stuff away.

We brought a smart tv this year for the boat. I like that we can do catch up and stream from our phone. Curry’s do good deals, think you can get a 40” smart one for £250. How much was you expecting to pay?

A television on/off switch is a £10 (at most) part that would take an hour (at most) to replace.

We don't want a smart tv ... it's pointless without wifi which we don't have.

It's gets worrying when a 40 inch (!) telly is described as "old". I've not had TV equipment for years the biggest I had was 14 inches. Yes 14. It's a bit bonkers the way they get bigger and bigger. I suppose at some point entire walls will be taken up by the infernal things.

I recall a TV programme called "Smart phone, stupid man". Perhaps there is scope for one about TVs?

"Smart" is quite a clever way to make a product more appealing. It implies that the person buying it is "smart" but what it actually means is that the product you are buying is able to identify your personal traits and characteristics which can then be used for targeted advertising. That's all it's about. Dressed up as being more useful to the consumer. They really get into your head. Like a worm.

Can't argue with that @someboater ... the majority were 60" and even larger ! This is the first relatively large screen tv we've had, a cast off from Jane's Mum ... but after 5 years or so Jane has become accustomed to that size at home. The tv is intended to be operated by remote, but that packed up a couple of years ago, however there is/was a none contact relay on the front which allowed manual turning off/on ... channel changing etc was then operated through the digital recorder remote. I suspect Jane will decide to buy a new tv (JVC none smart 40" about £200) and connect the recorder by hdmi lead ... the dvd player only connects by scart so that will become obsolete. If I'm honest I don't really care what she chooses ... I can still watch rugby on the old tv in my room upstairs so all's right with the world Rog
