Very energy intensive, and the filters are quite exspensive. But good on sea going boats, where fresh water can be in short supply. On the inland waterways its much easier to use the taps provided. But as your making a post apolaypse bunker its probably invaluble.

I stayed on a camp site with Ultra violet water purification, IIRC it was for bacteria.

I'm not making a post apocalyptic bunker myself it's just that I have bought one already made and am trying to understand the reasoning behind all the installations. It is a seagoing boat so I guess the idea was to provide backup in the event of fresh water running out.

Just realised the Bunker was built to perform a single handed circumnavigation of the globe without sails. Using inland waterways as much as possible hence the 6ft2 air draft with everything down.
It must be a bit awkward to do that with diesel engines due to the range and fuel consumption issues. .
Large stern deck can accommodate a lot of barrels of diesel. It seems to me that getting diesel delivered pre-packed in 205 litre barrels takes out the contamination risk problem associated with loading fuel from yards or fuel boats. And there are cranes both sides of the boat to get the barrels on and off.
Twin BMC 1.5 quite economical good hull shape maybe 3 litres per hour at 5mph.
So 300 litres 500 miles.
built in diesel tanks are two X 300 litres so a 1000 mile range without extra fuel add another 3 barrels that's another 1000 miles. Also having over 500 litres tankage allows road delivery so probably cleaner fuel. Avoid the trashy diesel. Sensible. ] Etc
