Not played with CB for years but as I was recently given a very nice one (Cats Whiskers DSC CB radio) I wondered if it's worth getting it going or has everyone abandoned it in favour of mobile phones.
This one is from a farm. Able to selectively call up to five different stations or be used as a normal 40 channel scanner. It does come on and display numbers change channels and hiss etc so I reckon it works.
Or would it just be the sound of radio silence ?

So I guess it's a bit obselete now then. Probably more of a collectors item or something for fish to nest in.

We truckers all had them back in the day but then the airwaves seemed to be taken over by Council House FM.

I have one, there are people about still. One of the cars had one on the banger rally and said they spoke to loads of people on the road.
I'll be taking mine next year.

The aerial plug is the same as the marine vhf and the whip for that is a seriously large one so I suppose I might be able to pick up signals from quite a distance.
Worth a play I guess.

My mate has one, fits it on whatever van he has. By coincidence I mentioned it last night, he said there's not many about on the roads these days.

Not really a great idea. Marine VHF is around 156 MHz and CB is around 27MHz. OK to use a marine antenna for receive, but transmission with a badly mismatched antenna is a bit risky as it's all too easy to blow the output transistors, unless the radio manufacturer has included protection. E.t.a When you say "whip" , is it a long bit of wire, or is it in a plastic pipe?

A small group of us use cb on the Broads. Generally when cruising in company. The old Naughty Forty am set were a much better quality signal than the legal Fm sets are.

Visible in this photo is on top of the radar arch beside the starboard exhaust and the blackened radar reflector. I haven't measured it (as the actress said to the bishop) but it's at least 6ft.
