Well with winter looming and another 4months of miserable cold night working, I finally got round to wiring up my remote Webasto switch-on setup today. Last year I relied on my timer to have the boat warm when I got home, but due to having to βguessβ what time Id get finished, more often than not I was home too late or too early to have a toasty boat. This summer I decided βno more!β so got all the gear to build a remote setup to compliment my remote electric blanket switch that I used all last year, that I can turn on when I leave site / am half hour from home. Timer has been left as is so I stillhave that function If I need use it in the future. Built and tested today...Seems to do the job just as I planned.π 240V relay to trigger the Webasto tested.. Wifi triggered double socket with USB point for keeping the router charged. Sockets are switched using the βSmart-Lifeβ app on your phone Testing the phone switch worksπ All wired & Switching the Webasto on remotely.... Success...No more arriving home at 05.00 to a freezing cold boat, all in total cost about Β£25 plus a couple of enjoyable hours work. π

son set up a means to remotely switch the heating on in his van conversion which he's just installed with a little help from me....works really well. I cannot help remembering how useless number 3 son used to be in IT and all this sort of stuff....just shows if u really want to achieve summit theres a way. However despite being there and watching/listening and asking loads of questions I still haven't a clue.

Using crappy old phone technology is βSoooo last year Darhlingβ Β for modern boat life, ( but still fine and dandy for Β RC-IED use!π₯ ) The other fun one was using an old button phone to make a mooring alarm. Using the speed dial function. You program your number into speed dial 2 then remove the keyboard and solder a thin 2 core wire to the inner and outer contacts of button two. Lead this wire to a Normally Closed reed switch. Stick that reed switch to a magnetic 2p coin or other steel disc. Stick this disc inside window and a magnet on outside of window attached to strong fishing line with a tent peg stick that in ground. The magnet will (if it is a strong one) open the reed switch contacts. If boat becomes detached/set adrift the magnet will detach from the reed switch which will close contacts and the speed dial 2 will be activated on the phone.
