Attempted a quick fix by removing the drain plug at the bottom of the carb and releasing some fuel into a small glass. No water apparent but there were a few bits and pieces of muck. Ran it for an hour and a half last night, no problems. I reckon those bits of muck might have been moving around in there as fuel was drawn in and blocking the jet, from time to time. Does that sound plausible? Yes. On a small engine, a speck of carbon can be all that is needed to block the jets, which are tiny. Sometimes on a carbed bike with a manual choke, the test was to engage the choke as the engine died. If it picked up, it was a strong indicator of a blocked jet (fuel starvation) since what you are doing is enriching the mixture. Covering the air intake with your hand has the same effect as applying choke. The only real solution is to strip and clean the carb and fuel lines. But if you are lucky, spraying a shitload of carb cleaner from any motor factor into it may do the trick since the chemicals it contains can dissolve carbon deposits. Check all filters. Consider cleaning the fuel tank. If the engine cuts out without any stuttering or other indication it is going to stop, the issue may well be unrelated to fuel starvation.

Spark plug? Fuel filter? Fuel 'needle hole' needs cleaning/widening? Fuel 'needle hole'? Perhaps you mean the main jet? needs widening??? You have no fucking idea what you are talking about. As usual. It's referred to as a 'needle hole' up this way, you may call it 'the main jet' if you like. Yes, 'widening' in as such that if such is partially blocked and you stick a needle in it, the hole that was small is afterwards bigger or 'wider'. It is a wonder how I get through life when I am so totally clueless. Driving on icy, slippery roads today... and have avoided ploughing into the ditch so far, I just can't understand what I am doing wrong...! Ten bucks says it's the fuel filter. Ricco is notorious for his laid back approach to maintenance.

No Foxo, never stick a needle in the jet unless you want a new problem. Mechanically speaking, yes it is a wonder you get through life, you must be lucky.

And you never, ever, attempt to clean a blocked jet by inserting something into it. Unless you are a clueless twat. From Twatland.

My understanding is that you should never insert anything hard into a jet. They are built to very fine tolerances, even a slight 'widening' of the hole will result in problems. I believe a soft bristle from a brush is acceptable but the best way is to use compressed air.

Compressed air is fine if you have it, otherwise leaving it immersed in the aforementioned carb cleaner often has a positive effect. Sometimes just blowing through it works. But if you can show me a technical manual that recommends inserting anything into a jet I'll eat my hat. Still, a man is free to stick anything he likes up his hole. Have fun.
