The boat has a pair of quite old BMC 1.5s in it. From some research regarding engine numbers it seems probable they are 1970s Police spec Austin J4 diesel 1.5 units marinised by the bloke what made the boat and with PRM delta gearboxes. All working lovely but the oil question arises. What to use? My friend has a thornycroft BMC 1.5 and it says 30 monograde in his engine manual but then some people say 20w/50 is okay. It's a really thorny issue which is keeping me awake so I wondered if there was some expert ease on this forum for this kind of problem. I'm tempted to be a real rebel and use a 15w/40 on it. But I don't know if it is API CC or not. Predicted useage pattern is going to be about 50% rated output on average. Enclosed engine room so it's quite warm in there once up to temperature.

Any 20/50 API CC oil is fine - Comma classic is good gear, Halfords put it in a posh tin. Used it for years
I’m on Motul inboard 15/50 CD now due to the hairdryer nailed to the manifolds.
A 15/40 CF would also be fine as it is a replacement for an obsolete spec, but seeing as the obsolete spec is still available at little extra cost you might as well stick to the API CC grade....
I personally wouldn’t run an SAE 30 oil, we ditched straight oils years ago and not without good reason.

I was in the auto parts shop with my friend earlier today. He is an old git (75) just a boat and state pension nothing else in the world and he was intent on paying £44 for two 5L plastic (!) cans of Morris 30 monograde for his Thornycroft BMC 1.5 unit (narrow boat installation). I was eyeing up the 20/50 for my engines which was half the price. However the 20w/50 did not have an API spec on it. It was a Comma product.
So are we talking about a marketing thing going on with the old API CC thing ?

Right, now gazza has given a spot on answer to your question can you answer this? Why are you such a lame brained cunt?

Bringing your own particular brand of worthlessness into what could potentially be quite an interesting thread is beneath contempt.

So it looks like 20w/50 then. As long as it's not synthetic. A bit of ash in the oil is good apparently to reduce the bore glazing problems.
Thanks for that.
