Yes there were a few little springers fitted with Sabb singles. Very nice units. Similar to the Bukh engines they are dedicated marine engines. Not marinised industrial engines.
I bought a Saab twin with gearbox years ago for Β£350. Put it in a 40ft narrow boat. it was a great unit no smoke ran as clean as a whistle. Only moan was the cone clutch gearbox slipping but that is a well known issue with cone clutches and cardan shaft drivelines. Even the expensive Kelvin engines do it. I should have chopped the engine beds down rather than using UJs.
Lovely engines.

My pal, ex 1st engineer in the merchant navyππ swears by his twin pot, ex trawler boat engine.
He has a spare one in the marina paintshed....Apparently, βThey are so goodβ he needs to cart a spare with him wherever he goes!
Go figure!

Considering it is a no longer produced unit it seems sensible to have a full set of spares or replacement unit available in the unlikely event of any major failures. It's a better approach than planning for a potential repowering excercise.
Carrying spares is a personal thing which is in many cases unrelated to the probability of them being needed.

I just thought with so many enthusiasts here, and I keep hearing the name 'Sabb' and that they are good engines, that someone might be interested in this little engine. U seriously didn't expect any thread(kept Rugby) to remain serious did u?....

I think I know the boat that this came out of, but the alternator would be a recent addition. I've heard this popping its way all round the Midlands in a reasonably sound Springer owned by a sadly departed committed canal enthusiast.

It's a well proven fact that spares are only needed when you haven't got them.
