it all reminds me of Nero in a way. Boris is certainly an expert on the fiddle.

I still see no evidence that people want to change their ways - just go to any supermarket car park and in they come in their cars - and, of course, the more expensive and bigger car you have the better a person you are. I think people could well get by with less - but they just want televisions the size of a snooker table on their wall. Absolutely - fine words, foxxy, but what exactly are you doing about it? Surely the whole point is that nearly no-one is prepared to show an example by simplifying their lifestyle (apart from hippy tree-dwellers). Why should we suffer deprivations if you don't? We are now putting our plastic waste into the plastics bin in Kannus (behind the alcohol store). We return our glass and plastic bottles to the machine in the shop that gobbles them up and gives us some coins back. We travel by train often, thus saving wear and tear on our car and nerves. Our narrowboat engine uses only half-a-litre per hour. I drive a bus, thus reducing the number of cars on the road. We don't buy any newspapers (apart from Private Eye) so are saving the rainforest. I am not as fat as many overly-heavy fatties who fly, thus saving on kerosene when we jet around the world. I think that's enough.

I am not as fat as many overly-heavy fatties who fly, thus saving on kerosene when we jet around the world. I think that's enou qhhard to agree with that actually. - there are 8?billion souls on this planet (set to level out at about 12 billion this century). ......... if they all aspired to follow your lifestyle in all respects we would be extinct within the same century. - those souls would also like to have a narrowboat (what's the carbon footprint of the manufacture of just one of those) or some similar 'luxury'. - you drive a bus, but it doesn't reduce the number of cars on the road .............. it may limit the increase of cars, but I am not aware of anyone thinking 'foxxy drives a bus so I will scrap my car'. .................................. the only way to do that is to limit people's 'right' to travel long distances. - you jet around the world - 12 billion souls would like to do likewise, what makes you so special? the only way to avoid that is to limit people's 'right' to travel long distances. this is not a personal attack - I would just like to point out that our western lifestyle (however 'environmentally friendly' we try to be) is simply not sustainable if the same lifestyle is to be enjoyed by 12 billion souls ................ and we cannot reasonably deny them that 'right'. there is no adequate example that we can set for the rest of the world unless we limit our birthrate to much less than 2, live off the land around us (resourcing all of our needs) without involving anything other than highly local 'trade', and replace any resources that we consume or destroy in the process. ................. that is never going to happen, so your (and others') efforts to be more environmentally friendly do no more than delay the inevitable by a few years.

I think it's best just to not give a shit.
Once you start giving a shit it causes problems. So what if the humans are going to nacker themselves? Does it amount to a hill of beans ?
I reckon the eventual outcome will be massive population reduction by war, famine, pestilence and natural phenomena.
What's not to like?

If it weren't for me the kiddies would have their mums and dads taking them to school in their cars - or tractors. More or less same kids every day - some of them are on my bus for an hour, shortest journey about 5 kilometres.

The thing is, why are there so many people on the Earth? Nature will put a stop to it... in a nasty way. It's dog eat dog. We'll be lucky if we get to Paddington without being mugged.

Do dogs actually ever eat other dogs?
It's a well used expression but I wonder if it is reality based or if dogs might actually specifically avoid eating other dogs.
Someone must have studied this.

Hmmm. Who is it that profits from all this gun running then? That wouldn't be wealthy western pension fund beneficiaries would it ? It's easy to blame the man who sells the guns but who is funding him via share holdings ?

"I enjoy chaos and disorder – not just because they help me professionally – they’re also my hobby. You see, I’m an entropy fan. When I first heard of entropy in high school science, I was attracted to it immediately. When they told me that in nature, all systems are breaking down, I thought: “What a good thing! What a good thing! Perhaps I can make some small contribution in this area myself.” And of course, it’s not just in nature, in this country, the whole social structure… just beginning to collapse, you watch; just beginning now to come apart at the edges and the seams and the thing I like about that is that it means it makes the news on television more interesting, makes the television news more exciting, makes it more fun. I watch television news for one thing and one thing only: entertainment! That’s all I want from the news: entertainment! You know my favourite thing on television? Bad news! Bad news and disasters and accidents and catastrophes. I wanna see some explosions and fires!" - George Carlin
"I’m tired of these self-righteous environmentalists; these white, bourgeois liberals who think the only thing wrong with this country is there aren’t enough bicycle paths! People trying to make the world safe for their Volvo’s! Besides, environmentalists don’t give a shit about the planet. They don’t care about the planet; not in the abstract they don’t. You know what they’re interested in? A clean place to live; their own habitat. They’re worried that someday in the future, they might be personally inconvenienced. Narrow, unenlightened self-interest doesn’t impress me.
Besides, there is nothing wrong with the planet… nothing wrong with the planet. The planet is fine… the people are fucked! Difference! The planet is fine! Compared to the people, THE PLANET IS DOING GREAT: Been here four and a half billion years! Do you ever think about the arithmetic? The planet has been here four and a half billion years, we’ve been here what? 100,000? Maybe 200,000? And we’ve only been engaged in heavy industry for a little over 200 years. 200 years versus four and a half billion and we have the conceit to think that somehow, we’re a threat?" - George Carlin
