We will leave our winter mooring on the Ashby next March and probably head towards the middle levels. This is not set in stone but havenβt been that way before so thought we should go see. Anyone here have any suggestions of the good and bad bits there?

Nene is quite nice but a bit dodgy after rain obviously. I remember the middle level link having terrible weed problems but again that's seasonal. Salters Lode to Denver sluice was a bit alarming in a narrow boat but no actual problem. great Ouse a nice river some of the moorings were a club deal so unless you are a member you might find it awkward. Membership is cheap anyway. @gazza will know about that. And I think NigelMoore as well.

Can't help sorry ianali but I believe @gazza 's your man when he's free. I think we've decided not to make plans ... so much disruption last year. We may give the Llangollen a try early on, as we failed this year, but we'll probably just bumble about and see where we end up. Rog

join the Gt Ouse Boating association .... well worth while and very cheap, gives you a lot more mooring points
I found a mud weight a handy accessory as well
Loved the Great Ouse and the tributaries and explored nearly all of it in my little yoghurt pot, wonderful cruising
PS Phil70 another fund of information he was based on the Lark

We have thought about popping up the Llangollen early springtime before the middle level adventure. Could end up anywhere really π

We will leave our winter mooring on the Ashby next March and probably head towards the middle levels. This is not set in stone but havenβt been that way before so thought we should go see. Anyone here have any suggestions of the good and bad bits there? There are no bad bits to speak of, you are getting on for an area to rival the land of milk and honey π odd bits of advice. Iβd use Northampton marina if you wish to stay in town, Northampton as a county town has its faults but there is plenty to do and see during the day, some good pubs, a theatre and a decent sized Morrisonβs on the site of the old cattle market right next to the embankment. The Britannia has always been pretty good, usually a decent selection of beers and reasonable food, short amount of mooring outside the pub. Billing aquadrome has visitor moorings giving access to two choke and puke pubs and a stuff your face oriental restaurant, along with a swimming pool and cafe. White Mills Marina is excellent and has a very good cafe. Wellingborough is best passed through, Dog and Duck pub is crap and Tesco a decent walk. Noisy Whitworyhs mill and sometimes plagued with shitbag kids. After that everything is rural enough to leave you in peace. Peterborough is ok, a few down and outs litter the embankment but I rarely hear of problems, itβs a fine city worth a look. The Middle Levels are ace, mooring options are limited, a visit to the lovely market town of Whittlesey is worthwhile, if staying in March Iβd book in at Foxβs Upwelll Staithe is great, you can turn in Outwell basin if not going on to the Great Ouse. Ramsey is a bit non descript but does give a cruising loop back towards the Nene, Benwick is a funny little place worth a look. if you do the above keep your roof clear or the bridges will fetch it off for you - this includes solar panels! You are looking at a max air draft of 1.9m for the link route above Marmonts Priory lock and the Old Nene by Benwick. as for weed, explore in early spring/summer, hot weather can promote heavy weed growth on the outer reaches. The link route is usually passable at any time as the MLC do their best to keep it clear. Take heed of @loddon comment re flooding, we have basically had 6 days flood free and river open from the 25th of October π€ Usally calms down after Easter but no guarantees - a wet winter followed by a crap spring/ summer will see boats tied up more often than not. I wont fit it all in to one post, go for it and ask questions later ππ»πβ
