I did a quick 3 miles in the kayak this morning to get rid of my rubbish at Poynton. Hugged the far bank and stared straight ahead, this avoided too many cries of 'merry Christmas' from strangers walking the towpath. So far so good but shortly I have to go to my sister's, which is far from good.

Did the meal and presents with the offspring and their families last weekend. Spent from 11pm last night to 3am today applying a fresh coat of two-pot epoxy varnish to the wooden floor in our bar. Up at 1030, just watched Tommy Cooper on telly, off to the son's for their Christmas dinner later. Feel the need for some fresh air so may wash the car if I can be arsed.
Back into the bar tomorrow to set up for opening on Friday. Each to their own I guess ..
Happy Christmas.

Yes, cos if you look someone in the eyes and exchange a simple pleasantry you'll obviously burst into flames Rog I haven's spoken to anyone today. I sort of grunted at some bloke at Rose Narrowboats but other than that I have been totally unsociable. I put a coat of paint on the roof hatch and offered up the stencil I made, but I think it needs to be bigger so I'll cut a new one tomorrow.

Definitely needs to be bigger. Strange, but when I think of you I always think of a big (preferably heavy) club Rog

I smiled and waved at the one and only person I saw on my extremely short cruise this morning after I'd done an oil change*. Need a new air filter but - they're all closed today!!! Feet up now in front of the fire with a large glass of red and another Eccles cake! Cheers!! Merry Christmas everybody. met x *eta - no pictures are available

Any excuse for a good drink. One can always celebrate the commissioning of Lots Road Power Station in February 1905 as well! Have not got a closer date so we can use the whole month to celebrate. consecration of Westminster Abbey 28/12/1065 or a nice boaty one .... launch of HMS Warrior 29/12/1860 05/01/1066 Harold Godwinson crowned the last Saxon king of England all worth a good booze up HMS warrior, I have been onboard a few times Britain's first iron hulled armoured battleship, I believe.

Whilst I do like it I am more of a HMS Victory fan. With its history with Nelson. And going on board and imagining how they lived back then.
All the way to it still being the flagship of the first sea lord and that it is the worlds oldest naval ship still in commission.
That and I have very early memories of visiting with my sister who I very rarely saw and still don't see often due to her living stateside.
I might pop down with my camera at some point and have a bit of a practice at the historic docks.

I think my favourite of the wooden sailing vessels is the third rate "Trinvcomalee" in Hartlepool

Yes, cos if you look someone in the eyes and exchange a simple pleasantry you'll obviously burst into flames Rog More than happy to exchange pleasantries with strangers, I do so daily. However when they say "merry Christmas" I struggle to respond. It's such a massive cliché, a cliché that means nothing to me. If I do respond it's along the lines of "have a good one" or similar. Any cards I write have no reference to Christmas, that would be disingenuous. Instead I refer to the festive season. Festive season can include the winter solstice, which I do celebrate.

I don't wish to foist what I celebrate onto others so make no mention of the solstice. Festive season is OK, it respects different people who chose to celebrate different things.

I really don't see your problem.
If somebody wishes you a merry christmas, happy new year, happy easter ... whatever ... it's just a pleasantry.
You're not expected to explain your beliefs, life story, motivations or e mails ... it's just a salutation.
A smile and thank you is enough for most.
If you wish to celebrate the solstice, I'm sure you'll find people will just smile and return your pleasantry.
It's not a judgement ... its just a politeness.

Rog I bought one of these T shirts off of ebay and I find that simply pointing at it saves a lot of effort.
