I dont know why but this year Ive realised we have had christmas rammed down our throats for what seems like months on end, endless pre Xmas sales. Black friday, cyber monday, sale, sale, sale. As usual, trying to go to the shops just for run of the mill stuff, milk, eggs etc has been hard work all this last week. I saw people with trollies piled really high with food and the check out queues have been manic.π
Yesterday and this morning on the radio Ive heard endless adverts for sales staring today and after all the excesses of yesterday, I hear that people have been queuing at 5am this morn to be first at the shops for yet more indulgence! π±
Surely It's all getting a bit much isn't it? We do seem to live in a very greedy society nowadays, as a child I used to get a white football sock with apple, orange, a bar of chocolate and maybe a matchbox car or 2 in there, I dread to think of the waste generated over the christmas period nowadays. Its dreadful to think there are people in the world with absolutely nothing, Yet they give so much freely and yet, in our modern western society, some are likely to kill each other over the last cheap βsaleβ TV in stock! π
Where has it all gone wrong? π
Whats your views?

You are so right, over the years demand and expectation have grown at an extraordinary rate. It seems to me that parents have decided to indulge their children no matter what the cost, the kids have cottoned to this fact and exploited the generosity of the parents to the Nth degree . It will continue like this untill parents hold back and only spend what the can afford. Phil

My old Dad made most of our presents ... weeks of secret work.
I'm sure if he'd had more disposable cash he'd have spoiled us rotten.
Being at work in retail today, the thing that most disappointed me was the number of kids ... younger than ten ... being dragged around shops rather than at home enjoying christmas.
But I try to think that because something is different doesn't necessarily mean it's worse ... today will be the 'good old days' for some one day.
I'm just really happy with my memories of my sainted old Mum and Dad and Christmas's past.

Its crap in a big way people getting themselves into debt for one day! Its all retail and media driven But are they really? Is this assumption or fact? Sure there's piles of advertising but why do you assume everyone falls for it?

I think there must be a modicum of truth to this statement because of the reports by finance institutions that keep a weather eye on the amount of borrowing and use of credit facilities such as overdrafts, credit cards etc. Phil

What Phil says, My other half until this time last year was a higher grade bank manager so she has seen first hand the madness of people at Christmas

There were motorway display boards with "high traffic volumes" written on them warning of areas well known for shopping like Brent Cross (Brent Cross) and White City (Westfield) today. And I also noticed heavy traffic in the area around High Wycombe (Eden shopping centre) as I drove through from Henley down to London via M40. One of the big roundabouts was packed with cars. Normally you would associate this with traffic bound for the motorway but they were all going to the shopping centre.
It's completely mad.

Its one reason why I chose to be away..cannot cope with the excess of seeing all the hype and money spent on stuff destined for an already bulging land fill We are a nation of excess when it comes to this festive season. Pleased that my lot finally cottoned on to no material gifts for mum and instead have a few theatre trips to look forward to.
