so 1A is 1 coulomb/second? Yes. I was thinking, maybe batteries should be rated in Coulombs not ah... ;-) Nobody knows what Coulombs are, but as people at least recognise the Amp bit... Really, all most people care about having a measure to compare capacities of batteries on sale. If my batteries didn't typically knacker in a year that's all I'd care about and once I sort that out I'll be gratefully back to that ignorant state of mind. I do like systems that look after themselves with minimum intervention.

All we have to go on since birth are predictable and reliable patterns. So basically, I agree...

and an Amp HOUR is 1 coulomb per second for an hour so it does need the hour bit. Yes but dimensionally, when you multiply by time and divide by time, you are left with a dimensionless thing which is just a constant. In this case, the constant is the number of seconds in an hour. So an Ah has no dimension nor concept of time. Which makes sense if you think about it - in what way does time affect the capacity of a battery? (Setting aside self-discharge etc)

Ah were invented as an easy way for laymen to visualise charge capacity, but that comes with its own perils! 30Ah is a bit like saying “30 miles per hour for an hour” - it would be much easier to just say “30 miles”.

Anyway many of us are laymen here like Vince, so how come some of us don't get laid?

I'm not sure whether Chris would be relieved or pissed off if I did that... Ok, just realised I need to edit my post on the other thread. We just rely on predictable and reliable patterns...and sex... Oops, should have said my post earlier in this thread. Maybe I should add beer to my list?

The tidy bit might get tricky...

I've got an old fashioned moving coil battery conductance meter which estimates Lead Acid battery capacity in Kilowatts Same as this one

I've got an old fashioned moving coil battery conductance meter which estimates Lead Acid battery capacity in Kilowatts Same as this one I suggest putting it onto current range and then connecting across a lithium battery. The amount of smoke, flames and heat generated will be a good guide to the capacity of the battery.

It doesn't have a current setting.
It's a conductance meter for Lead Acid batteries. And a voltmeter.
Not a multimeter it's a different piece of equipment originally patented by Motorola.
Garages have digital ones of these to test car batteries with.
It's unrelated to Lithium batteries.
Battery conductance is actually quite an interesting way of measuring capacity as it does not rely on the battery being fully charged.

I thought Coulombs were how the subject of electrical resistance is introduced to children.
