It seems that section needs to be set to read only for it to be of maximum benefit. The thread about the Nene id not what I think was envisaged. If it can't be set to read only can a "do not post here" be added to the title in red capitals? Should that thread be moved somewhere else? Read only? Bollocks to that. Fincher tried that. I hate control freaks.

Not really keen on limiting who can post there. Perhaps have a polite request asking for things to be kept on topic (just in the Practical Advice & Guidance section), rather than locking things down. The only reason I say this is so that newcomers can find concise and constructive help without the thread being sidetracked and it can be kept as a resource of useful information without it becoming too diluted.

That was why I posted. All the regular members should know what that topic is for but new ones could easily think that is where to ask questions. In fact I think it should not have any threads in there, only the informative original post with the originator having corrected it if required in the light of comment. The discussion can take place else where with the original post duplicated to this particular area. Maybe just add "Read only" to the title.

I think it could be further proof that self moderation can work, as we have seen in other parts of the forum. If the forum is going to grow and become a true resource for all boaters (which I think it is well on its way to becoming) it has to have areas that remain more focussed than others.

That way those looking for information will have a clear and concise post. If you allow lots of discussion especially if some stuff that is posted is over complex or even plain wrong the casual reader will end up very confused.

I have added 'please keep posts on this board on topic' to the description.

I can only speak for myself (there again, right now I'm the only OP in there) but as corrections, suggestions and additions appear in the responses I'll incorporate them into the OP.
For instance, in the Charging one I've replaced 'Peukert' with 'Charge Efficiency' and in the Glossary I'm about to add two new entries, all thanks to the discussions which follow.
So, I personally welcome discussion in the threads as long as it remains on topic, and I definitely won't be asking for the threads to be deleted 😉

If the D9 is not to be given even more work trying to keep that area concise it needs protecting from posts and comment that would be better elsewhere. Its nothing to do with censorship or gratuitous control but everything to do with helping potential new members while minimising D9s work.
