Welcome Bromleyxphil, take what is stated on here as guidance and you will be fine - some people just don't understand adventure. Don't forget that you and the misses are signing up to months siting in a midge infested swamp though.

Hi Phil, having looked at your overlander blog I cant see you having any problems fitting out a sailaway narrowboat. That truck is some build by the way.
The guys & gals on here will give you lots of advice specific to build problems etc. Electrics and shore power come with there own headaches (pitting the hull etc) so best to ask or just seek advice straight off before taking the plunge. (no pun intended)
Do you have a hull builder/design in mind?

I feel it has to be done really (posthworeing I mean - for the health of the forum - without content it would be a "Titanic success". It especially helps if people like me with a lot of boating experience and knowledge can help other people out My advice is not underwritten by insurance BTW and I can all be thought of as bullshit if that's the preferred option. And where is that tongue in cheek thing. and asking who is going to build the boat is a Good Question

Thanks for the welcome, the midgies have never been a problem on the canals in the past I suppose it depends where you go. The mozzies in the Sahara earlier this year were like flying wolves though.

For hull building I would be most concerned about the quality of the steel - what it really is, and maybe go to the place where they're actually rolling it into plates. Get it as thick as possible, then you don't need to worry about pitting or bumping into things.
