Bad new, condolences to the victims families. Wonder if it was leaves on the tram tracks causing a loss of braking?

Trams have an extremely good safety record ....... I wonder what the cause was. It's being reported that the driver has been arrested, although I believe that is standard procedure in accidents such as this. The suggestion has been made by residents that the tram was travelling at excessive speed.

Thoughts with families of those lost and injured. I did hear on the news that the driver had been arrested, however, as in fatal car crashes that is the norm and it may be to record his or her version of events. As stated earlier it may have been caused by any outside problem (weather/leaves/mechanical etc) What a horrible experience though for the people aboard just doing their daily commute.

Bad new, condolences to the victims families. Wonder if it was leaves on the tram tracks causing a loss of braking? I'm presuming that it overturned at about 14:10 in this video, if so then it looks at though the bulk of the braking should have been done while the tram was in the tunnel. making leaf mulch unlikely. It is being reported now that the driver blacked out. Although the trams have dead mans handles, there is apparently a three second delay in applying the brakes if the handle is released, probably too long given that the tram has to slow from 80kph to 20kph in a very short distance.

The driver has been arrested which is common place in road traffic fatalities but I dont know about rail fatalities. Initial reports say the tram de-railed in the tunnel on the section between Addington and Sandilands. If that is the case then the tram has slid a long way to end up at that turn. Ive travelled that Tram many times when I worked in Croydon and that section between Lloyd Park and Sandilands is a long fast straight section slowing down only when it needs to make the turn. That Tunnel was originally part of the British rail network long disused till tramlink came along.
On the whole its got a great saftey record apart from the odd collision with cars.
very sad day for the families of all

The driver has been arrested which is common place in road traffic fatalities but I dont know about rail fatalities. .....sniped.... very sad day for the families of all The vast majority of rail fatalities the driver is not arrested, primarily because everyone understands there was normally little they could do to avoid the incident. More serious incidents like this one are more complex, sometimes the driver is dead, sometimes they have been arrested and sometimes not. I wouldn't read very much into the arrest at this point. I'm disappointed that the DM saw fit to release the number (incorrect number) of deaths before getting the go ahead from the police - this goes against long held practice within the UK that is aimed at trying to help those affected and provided info asap. I also hope that the driver's family (if there is one) are getting support/being protected from the worst elements of the press (this hasn't always happened in the past). I'm sure there will be much speculation to come. A sad day for all concerned.

In fairness, all early news reports gave the death toll as "up to eight", so presumably the DM got the information from the same news agency. It may well turn out to be correct, the latest death toll, six minutes ago, is seven. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-37919658EDIT- The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) said the tram was travelling at a "significantly higher speed than is permitted".

OK, I'm disappointed that the UK press didn't hold back on the number of fatalities. The protocols were put in place to help stop info leaking to relatives etc. They were put in place for UK incidents and didn't exclude the press reporting that some fatalities had occurred (for an incident of this size). The number of fatalities may turn out correct, but can we (the general population) no longer wait for official confirmation - it's extremely unlikely that any sort of cover up about the number of dead would happen in the UK. The RAIB will not issue that statement without being sure of the facts - this in no way should be interpreted that it was the drivers fault (until any further statement is made)

There is some speculation that it derailed while still in the tunnel, which would explain why it was unable to brake, and would point to mechanical failure.

A passenger just said on the news that it "felt like about 70mph" as it approached the bend.

One reason I think it quite possible that the tram derailed in the tunnel is that if it had come off of the tracks because it entered the bend at excessive speed, I would have expected it to end up much further away from the point where it left the tracks, as you can see the tram almost certainly must have already been in trouble as it entered the bend.
