WE have just come back from 6 days holiday first 3 in Athens stayed at the Hotel Royal Olympic [very good] we had a great time even though the Athens marathon was on, closing down where we were trying to get to!! and Obama ruining our travel plans back to the airport!! The food was cheap and good, the people pleasant and helpful and everything was clean we would go back in a heartbeat. The second 3 days was in Rome the Venitian Palace Hotel we love Rome and this is our 3rd visit and last! The change in a year is terrible refugees everywhere in tent cities Old Italians homeless on the street the place was filthy, prices have rocketed up and 3 years ago when people couldnt do enough to help you now just walk by. The museums are now very expensive so we walked by in the most. one the lady just talked on the phone and never looked to see what I wanted, we walked out! somebody in officialdom asked why I told her she just shrugged her shoulders, 20 euros lost there. It looks like a city in crisis the offices opposite the hotel opened at 8 and closed at 8!! long hours those. If someone was to ask me which place was doing better it would be Athens and I would not be surprised if Italy starts to go under next year everywhere you look there are soldiers and police on the streets! The churches however were doing alright as always or were they? the man collecting coins from the collection boxes was tutting at the collection so who knows?

Two fantastic cities, hard to chose between them as both are loaded with historic buildings and sights. If I was pressed though perhaps Athens just, and I mean just, snatches the gold medal (see what I did there?)

I've never been to Rome..had been on my list but maybe not now as I don't do crowds very well. I visited Athens post writing retreat I had attended on small island..having spent 2 weeks practically alone I didn't cope with all the noise, especially when targeted by those who chose to attempt to relieve me of my Euro's...I loved the ancient architecture but again crowds not for me. Ended up back at hotel mega early waiting to catch flight home..I doubt I will return. Some cities not so bad...guess its a question of feeling safe.
