Much later on .... suppose 90's ? I let my membership lapse as I just had the feeling it was becoming (or had become) like some yacht clubs, full of self important little gits that had plenty of time, after being retired from some middle management position, and were at a loss if they weren't telling other people what to do. ....... it just seemed so up it's own ...... .(remember John, Family forum) I think that's the problem with lots of societies. At the start they are populated by enthusiastic people who get stuck in, and only are officials because no other bu**er is doing it. At this stage they are very egalitarian. Gradually as you get other types of people joining especially those who like being on committees and having titles. Then the ethos changes. So a bit like certain Moderators on a forum

"Gradually as you get other types of people joining especially those who like being on committees and having titles. Then the ethos changes."
That sums up 'Communism' into Capitalism. Now that I think about it, if there are people here who helped the canals to be excavated, repaired and reborn for this current activity of leisure boating, I should like to say thank you, and also thanks to the volunteers who carry on with the maintenance of the waterways. Unsung and forgotten heroes I should imagine.

George Orwell summed it up nicely with Animal Farm. The self serving and greedy pigs rise to the top. I'd say the hardworking or talented often rise to the top. Whereas the lazy or talentless try to schmooze their way into jobs with little accountability. Back to topic, how much of the canals is narrow and how much is wide? Would it be acceptable charge fat narrowboats for 50% of their 'fatness'? Whatever happens if CRT didn't piss money away on legal action, they wouldn't need so much additional income...
