Six months to stop beside the towpath for repairing an engine sounds iffy to me. If it's hopeless, pull it out and chuck a new one in. What would the Police say if it took me 6 months to fix a puncture on the hard shoulder of the M25? If they could afford a new one. Some folk are just barely on the breadline. Something like a major engine failure can stretch the finances.

What is the answer, then? Everyone gets engine failures and everyone comes to a halt. And everyone just stays there? If on the breadline, and in danger of overstepping CRT's rules, will the DHSS chip in to help boaters carry on cruising? What if you can't afford the BSS, or hull maintenance and boat is likely to sink soon... I look at 'both sides' of these discussions but sometimes I'm lost. One person can not feed all the hungry mouths of the world.

The fact is there is no time limit in law for overstaying when you have a reasonable reason to do so, what is reasonable in different circumstances ? if you were seriously ill and were unable to move on, stuck in an area without any available moorings, you have no income anymore to pay for someone to move your boat, what you going to do ?
One thing that won't happen is the local council offering you housing while you own a boat.

Its funny what computers cannot handle...I tried to open up joint bank account with little sis and initially system couldn't cope with the same dates of birth...we had to keep going in with more proof that there were 2 of us

I opened and account for my nipper and after a while I realised we weren't getting a statement through and I had little account details. So I rang them up and they refused to talk about the account to me asking to speak to the account holder. I put hon on the line for a whole. But his conversation skills at 6 months old were not great. Had to go in and speak to our freindly bank manager whom we've known for years. Sorted in secs. I can go in and take money out but can't do anything over the phone.
