Look up 3 posts. Gawd. ( goo.gl/photos/t8DgZCX63UgDu18Y7 ) doh! I'm glad I don't have to mend it, but even being very polite your quote looks like £100/hour. Yes, that seems a good guess, tea doesn't drink itself either you know!

Could you replace with a skin fitting, some car rad hose and jubilee clips?
These days cheap inverter welders are going for < £100, need a shoreline though.

She couldn't understand why I was so keen to look in detail at what was preventing us from loosing the battle with gravity!

Besides the fact of real cheap stuff being 'orrid Gonna be better than a buzz box from Aldis, buy some decent rods though, from a proper welding supplier. Looks like an EU made GYS inverter can be had for £200, good reviews: www.amazon.co.uk/d/Welders/GYS-GYSMI-130P-130A-Stick-made-France/B00AC3XHVOForums like www.mig-welding.co.uk can be a help for avoiding the cheap shite welders, if you want to!

I have to be careful here! I could bore the tits off all of you on this subject!
But, yes, you are right, there are some reasonable bargains to be had.
The ThermalArc stuff is good, not the cheapest but worth the extra beer tokens.
As for electrodes, a bog standard 6013 Murex zodian universal is as good as most will ever need. The shite maypole, parweld, also, lidl etc want steering clear of, they never strike up well, the flux often falls off unused rods - nasty!

I'm still using the Oerlikon Fincord 3.2's and 5's I bought 20 years ago in bulk when we were doing the major steelwork

Their not a bad electrode, easy slag removal with those, it curls up and goes lovely and brittle like glass.
I've some very good Silvercord stainless rods - ideal for site work when a tig set is more trouble than it's worth!

That was my 'boatyard guesstimate' 500 Pounds - they always hum and hah and scratch their heads and try to convince you it's much more complicated than 20 minutes and 20 quid.
