Many thanks. I will probably have more questions to ask from local boaters as the time draws nearer. Can I just check that I have got one thing right though, I won't need a licence for the Bridgewater for a visit of less than seven days? As long as you are planning on being on and off the Bridgewater within the 7 days and don't plan to go back on again for another 28 days then that will be fine. Unfortunately you can't break the 7 days up by doing 3 days on the Bridgewater then 2 days off it then doing the last 4 days to get back again: Any return within 28 days from the date of leaving whether leaving after 3 days or 5 days or up to 7 days you will require an additional permit.

They have to catch you first. I went to Liverpool and back no problem, within 28 days. No signage at ends of Bridgwater at the time, so was intending to plead ignorance and just cough up if caught. I heard that Sonny was sent on Customer Interface Training, though it might have been Customer Understanding, No Tantrums. Anyone met him since? Does he tell you to please fuck off nicely, now?

Update: www.towpathtalk.co.uk/update-on-vicars-hall-bridge-works/"This stretch of canal is an important link between the north and south of the inland waterways system, enabling navigation from the Leeds and Liverpool canal in Wigan with the Rochdale canal in Manchester and the Trent and Mersey at Preston Brook." Looks like there's just one man doing all the work.

A mate of mine's been over today. He spoke to someone in the works office. They told him they are weeks off finishing the work. But they are removing the dam on Tuesday and the canal will be open from Wednesday as promised.
They will need to close it again to put the bridge road on but that will only take a couple of days when they do it.

Why are you so interested in the Bridgewater Canal being opened at Vicar's Hall Bridge? CRT certainly couldn't give a toss! Because, for anyone who knows the area. It's the only way from North to South/S/N without a 150 mile detour and about 2 million locks and the longest and lowest tunnel in the country. As it's The Middlewich FAB next month so everyone will be travelling south and I want to go to Preston, North, from Northwich. And as about 5000 holiday boats want to use it. Maybe they should give a toss

I always thought bigste was a reasonable poster on Canalworld so I hope he doesn't mind me copying his comment made just a few minutes ago (Saturday morning):
"Came through yesterday (Vicars Hall Bridge). Still lots to do but they let you through as and when so expect a delay. It won't get you far because the Leigh Branch and the L&L are short of water. I'm near Wigan and am high and dry. They have padlocked the Leigh Branch locks and I'm waiting to move from below lock number two."
