Selling off council houses was to my mind immoral, I can't help thinking of my in-laws and stay at home daughter who bought their council house for peanuts (£17000) and now sis-in-law is sitting in a house worth close to half a million. They all worked at good well paid jobs and could easily have afforded to buy a private house but the government at the time said "hey buy it" This was repeated all down the road. Many houses lost forever to the social housing stock Phil It's going on all over again with the right to buy housing association houses - madness for the long term future of housing. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think there is a slight difference - before, the council couldn't spend the sale money on building new council houses, but now the housing associations get money back for the houses which they can spend on building new ones. In theory at least!

In theory at least! Yes you are correct. The discount are very much reduced as well. My view is that it is better than the old scheme but still takes houses out of the social housing sector, whilst at the same time causing concern about the future for those capable and willing to invest in social housing.

And yet, the gypsy situation has been significantly improved by the simple expedient of identifying areas they can legitimately stay. Why is this beyond the wit of man with regard to boaters in areas like London and the K&A. The mooring situation is relieved in winter by C&RT creating winter moorings, which additionally raises funds. If that can be done for four months a year cos it suits, surely it can be extended to help out the young families. Of course there will always be the individual problem boater, but no need to treat all the same. I don't believe in the C&RT conspiracy to ethnic cleanse, but I don't believe boaters with jobs and families are the enemy either. Rog There are a couple of fixed sites in our country, this is what the visitors do. www.northantstelegraph.co.uk/news/mess-left-on-site-off-a43-at-kettering-after-travellers-leave-1-7771091

So why are they allowed to get away with this kind of shit? Their kids look like prostitutes at the age of 4! It's time to give them tea and cake and tell them what nice ethnic minorities they are. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4160724/Stunning-images-reveal-life-Irish-traveller-families.html'Ray Rodden' comments: "Why are people so against Travellers setting up camp near them?" Calling all Pikeys - off to Ray's garden to show him what you can do!! (edited to avoid ... well.... something!)

It's funny how people express things. Nick paints a picture of lazy no-goods invading picturesque Surrey, where I picture struggling families dealing with muggers in shitty bits of London. Neither of us really know.

Sadly we have more than our fair share of hassle with the bastards here. Mess is the visiting low life's. Organsised and serious crime the speciality of the site based gypos - along with your general fighting, thieving, drink driving etc etc. Every now and again they have ago at wiping themselves out, sadly they are less good at that than the above.

Aqueduct Marina is asking us for 400 Pounds/month just to park our 40-foot tub in their domain (and we don't need any services). I pay £312.50 a year.

So we come back to only allowing middle aged retirees on the canals do we?
What is wrong with young families wishing to live on a boat whilst working/schooling ?
The sun rises and sets, despite people paying to stay in one spot for four months in winter. I'm sure the same would apply if we extended the system, to the truly miniscule number who would wish to live the boaty life style all year.
Many have been on board, and in the same general area for years, without issue. Now they are hounded.
Instead of identifying problems, we should be working to provide solutions. Just saying 'they don't play by the rules' simply isn't good enough.

Just saying 'they don't play by the rules' simply isn't good enough. Rules made up, it seems. Bit like at the end of the TV ads where they mention 'Terms & Conditions' at 100-miles-per-hour so you just nod your head and say 'Yes, yes,' without having a clue what they were on about.

Neither of us really know. No, I don't think they are either lazy or no-goods. Well some of them may be, it takes all sorts of course. "They" (generalising) are a group who have found something they like in terms of lifestyle and want to cling on to it even though it is against the law and somewhat selfish. There are a myriad other examples of folk who want to do something, "have a right" etc when in fact it is against the law, against fair play / against social equity.
